River 6/4/26

I got out early to fish before the heat set in.

I was on the water by 5:25am.

Tried for topwater but it was not happening.  Water was more stained than I thought.  After a quick stop back at the ramp to pick up something I forgot, I made a short run and floated next to an island.  I saw some surface activity and dropped the anchor.  I tossed a swimbait to where the activity was and got the skunk out with this little guy.

For some reason, my phone was in action mode, and I could not figure out how to fix it.  I ended up catching 4 smallies with this one being the biggest.  They were fighting hard.

It was a fun flurry.  When that died off, I floated out.  My swim bait got destroyed, so I picked up a z-man worm and hooked a big catfish on a light rod.  I fought it for a while but it got off before I could net it.  Then I grabbed a rod with a mini max chatterbait and got another 13"er.

I made a longer run after that.  Th water was a little under 3 feet and temps ranged from 68-73 degrees.  I was catching submerged grass patches on my way upriver.  I am sure it came up before we got the rain.  The water was more stained upriver and I managed only 1 smallie on a crankbait.  No more bites and it was getting hot.  The breeze made it feel better when it blew. I tried a bunch of lures and decided to head back.  I made one more stop near where I caught the fish in the morning and hooked a tiny smallie on a flatworm.  I got off the water about noon. 7 smallies total and 1 catfish fight.  Nice morning.

Nice report!  Beating the heat is the plan for me when I can do it.  Great that you got some variety.  I've been pulling up a lot of grass too....been sticking to the shallow swim baits and top water this last outing.  How big do you think that cat went?  I've been enjoying catching some big ones lately when the fish bite dies down.

Re: River 6/4/26

I am not sure on the size.  I would say minimum 5 pounds.  It almost broke my rod when it went under my boat.  It was on a 7'1" light Dobyns Kaden spinning rod that I have caught 3 20+ inch smallies on.
