I was supposed to Meet up with George for a float but things didn't Workout on my end so I got in about 3 hours on a The river in a solo outing. I wasn't able to get the Kayak launched Until about 1045 and I only had about 3 hours max.
With how hot it was today I knew I needed to fish an area that was going to have plenty of oxygenated water, so I chose an area with a lot of shoots and emergent rock To Provide some riffles and the water I was looking for. I had the fluke on 1 rod, a chopper on another Karma a crankbait on 1 and a swim bait on the other. Turns out that I only needed 1 lure today that gave me.plenty of.action for.the first.hour.
I started working the right side and the shore moving upstream because that has been the ticket the last few years for me. Got to the 1st riffle area with some shade And through the swim bait and chop a few times with nothing. Through the Fluke a few times and got the first one in the kayak. It was a nice 14 or 15" fish that I saw chase it and inhale it because the water was shallow. Got another 1 smaller on that In the same area In the same.
Moved a little bit upstream to fish a similar area Above a ledge rock shelf. Noticed some bass chasing minnows In the push water right above a chutt So walked over there to make a cast. Got 1 right away that blew up on it but missed it. But a few casts later I saw the fish wipe at it underwater right above the chute, felt the weight and then set.the hook. I knew it was big And then I gotta look at it when it got over closer to me So I kept it down and not jumping as long as I could and then this 18 and 3 quarter smallie was on the measuring board
Kept working upstream and got to an area where a few weeks ago I had 3 or 4 fish hit but couldn't hook any of them. It's time I had a little different look. Through it in a little bit of shade right along the bank and 1Blew up on it twice before he was actually grabbing it. As I reeled it in he had 3 fish following him. Landed an unhooked 1 about 13 or 14" and threw back at the end of the little pool in the push water and had 1 blow up on it right away. That turned out to be this 1 about 15"
I needed a few more after this all in that 13-15 " range, which were all nice healthy average size fish which is a good sign for the future. All in all I was out on the water for about 2 hours and 45 minutes and landed 7 fish and had 5 or 6 more hits with a few nice blow-ups there where I simply just didn't get them landed.
But it was a short and exciting few hours With the way they were absolutely blasting those fluke. A couple times it was catching 1 after A couple times it was catching 1 after seeing the activity of them A couple times it was catching 1 after seeing the activity of them chasing fish A couple times it was catching 1 after seeing the activity of them chasing fish and A couple times it was catching 1 after seeing the activity of them chasing fish and throwing the fluke over.throwing
Definitely hoping this rain dress this week will bum up the water level a little bit but the 1 nice thing about this low Water times is that it puts fish in predictable locations which is generally shallower faster oxidated water. Which can make for a very nice flute bite
