I've been burning time at work to avoid having a bunch being converted to sick leave come December so I was back on the river Monday afternoon to try to find one a little bigger than 13 in. Went to a spot I haven't fished this year much but is a known winter hole to try my lot..
I started off fishing a couple smaller areas right upstream from the launch with no takers so decided to paddle right up to the big winter area. Started off on the back end of the hole. Throwing suspending jerkbait, finesse nedrig, minnow want to stand-up jig head, and a rattle trap. Saw a bunch of carb and catfish but no smallies. So I went up to the head of the winter hole where water was dropping over the ledge Rock to see if there were any fish hanging in the lazy boys as George refers to.
Made a cast right to where the current made of feeding Lane, filled a solid thump, and salt was a nice one. One. Got him in with the hook right in the top of the mouth and measured it to 17 in on the tail. Nice change of pace from the small ones lately.
I've worked that whole a little longer and then upstream slightly more and ended up catching another couple about 13 to 14 in all of them on that stand up jig head and a minnow.
