Fountainhead 10/17/25

Planned to fish two days this week with Jimmy.  He helped me install a Hummingbird H5 Sonar/Down Imaging unit I bought earlier this year.  We did not quite finish the install on Monday, and the wind looked bad for Tuesday, so we cancelled fishing Tuesday to finish the job.  I also put my spare on the trailer.

We got to Fountainhead before daylight and were on the water at first light.  It was pretty chilly.  We ran upriver and I stopped on a main lake point.  Shad were surfacing everywhere, and the Hummingbird unit was marking bait and fish.  Water temps were in the low 60's.  We tried some different lures but got no bites.  We moved to our next spot.  I was telling Jimmy about a time I saw a buck chase two does across the rez on the drive there and we saw this as we approached.  He made it 2/3 of the way across and got spooked and swam all the way back.

We got there.  The wind was making it difficult to keep position.  Jimmy had a bite and then I got a good bite that it hit again hard.  I set the hook and the tube pulled out of the fish's mouth.  A few snags later after fighting the breeze, we moved on.

The next area I hit was where I had a big fish break me off in a tree.  The water was down quite a bit.  We fished around there for a while and then I put a crankbait on one rod.  Jimmy picked that one up and caught this after a couple casts.

We kind of explored a little after that.  Maybe a couple bites, but enjoying the scenery and the Eagles, Ospreys, Pileated Woodpecker, King Fishers, Hawk and ducks.  Jimmy got this picture that almost looks fake.

We decided to go up the Bull Run arm after eating our sandwiches.  The water was so low, it was dicey just getting to the creek.  The creek itself is pretty deep.  There were some silted in spots and lots of wood to avoid.  We got back pretty far.  I was tossing a tube and Jimmy was using a fresh Keitech  Fat 3.8 I put on a sled head.  As I was repositioning the boat with my line in the water, Jimmy hooked a bass and boat flipped it before I could get the net.  It was kind of a cluster.  Nice healthy LM.

A couple casts later he got another bite.  This was a little guy.

It was a pretty long run back to the main lake and I wanted to hit one spot on the way.  We made it through the maze without issue and stopped to fish the area we got bites at in the morning.  We both got at least one bite, but no hook ups.  We tried a couple nearby areas before heading back to the ramp. We were off the water about 2:30pm.

It was a beautiful Fall Day to be on the water.  We saw no other boats (1 kayak) while we were out until near the ramp on return.  That is very unusual for the rez.  The depth finder worked well and was very helpful in navigating the shallow areas.  Tough fishing and some missed opportunities.  Great day overall.

I would say that yesterday was a tough fishing day from everything I witnessed and heard.

Good looking depth finder.

Time to go fishin' again!
