About three weeks ago I was referred to Mark Burks at Catoctin Creek custom Rods.
I had three rods that needed some work done on them.
I met up with Mark in Chantilly and showed him what I thought needed to be done.
Rod #1 - 18-year-old custom Hugh Miller spinning rod that needed to have one guide re-installed. Mark reinstalled the guide, and also re installed seven other guides after determining that were starting to fray and dry out. This was a high-end custom-built rod by Hugh Miller, and Mark totally tuned this rod up, and put protective epoxy on all of the guides. Ready to go again!
Rod #2 - 17-year-old custom Hugh Miller spinning rod. The main (largest guide) was not holding position - it was able to spin around a little bit. Mark removed and reinstalled the guide and also epoxied all of the guides. Looks fantastic and is well protected. The reel is already back on the rod and ready to go!
These two rods get used a lot and are my favorites for the light tackle fishing that I do in the Chesapeake Bay & and tidal rivers - they get worked pretty well.
Rod #3 - Really old Shakespeare Wonderod -One guide was missing, a metal guide. Mark had some spare guides, and was able to rearrange the guides, wrap to match, and epoxy.
He also restored the Cork grip. This rod is probably over 60 years old, and I plan to put an old Mitchell 300 on it and use it.
Mark is a professional. He kept me posted on the progress of the repairs via text and photos. Great guy to work with.
I also learned that he has built over 200 rods since 2009. He understands our local fishing environment which helps in the engineering and design of the custom rods.

You get great service, he gets a great write up! Supporting the locals.
Back in the day when the Hill brothers were running the BRHS Fishing Club, Mark donated a couple of custom built rods to them for their fund raising efforts. I ended up with one of the (won the raffle).
He does great work.
