Little River therapy

After a couple of busy weeks around the house, I had the opportunity for a short float on Saturday morning with a friend.  And he had one of those weeks as well, so it was needed for both of us.

River gauge was good but the river still had some stain to it.  Not.muddy but dirty enough that flukes or suspending jerkbaits would probably not work. Dirty enough that lures with some extra vibration and darker colors would probably work better.

We started slow with me catching the first one on a slightly bigger swim bait than usual.  Josh then caught a smaller one on a similar size swimbait. As we were floating downstream to the next good area, there was a pretty small eddy area.  I made a single cast and as I started to burn it for another cast, a nice smaller appeared about 2' from the kayak and grabbed the craw. After a few minutes, this almost 18" smaller was in the kayak.

When that fish hit turned out to be the key for the rest of the float. In the next hole, I had another small one hit the swim bait  right next to the kayak as I was burning it in to make another cast.   And Josh caught a couple on a whopper plooper.  I picked up a couple more on the spinner bait and crankbait .

Josh borrowed one of my darker green/brown crank baits and proceeded to catch a couple in short order on the crank bait. He hasn't really used them yet.

For the rest of the float, josh caught them on the plooper and crankbait.  I.caught them on a spinner bait, crankbait, buzzbait, craw and swim bait.  They were in eddy areas, along the current seams.  The key was keeping the lures moving faster.

I.ended up with probably 13-14 and Josh got about 10.  The wind did blow a little hard a.few times but it wasn't too bad.  And for both of us, much needed time on the water.

Great day!  Moving baits are coming into play as well as topwater.  Sounds good.  Too bad we are going to get a bunch of rain before I can get back out.

I might have started work a little earlier than usual so that I can get on the river for a couple hours this afternoon because of that very fact. Sounds like we're in for a wet couple days

The POR gauge is supposed to hit over 10' by Thursday morning. It will be a few days before it settles down.

Re: Little River therapy

That's going to be a lot of water in the Potomac

I made it back out today for a few hours. It was definitely slow figuring them out at first, only one small one on a plastic crawfish did have to get off the crank bait when they jumped both about 14 in. Before I started floating back down to the vehicle, I put on one of winco's old flukes, which had mostly a chartreuse tent due to being in the bag with another couple tail-dipped ones.

Managed to get six more on the fluke and the crank bait on the way back down. One was about 14 and 1/2 that literally cleared the water to hit the fluke right after it hit. The water. That hit alone made it worth it had another nice one. Missed the fluke but didn't go back and get it

I got my fix in case the river does get blown out and it's a while before I can get back on

Good job getting in some last minute action.

I am still kicking my behind for not going out today. It's gonna be a few days before the river settles down.

Re: Little River therapy

Good job getting back out.  I had lunch plans, but was thinking it would have been a good day to get out before the deluge.

Hiked along the banks of the Potomac today and saw a massive boil of fish.  Not sure what they were.  Carp was my guess?

Carp.

I saw one of these boils one day just above the ramp and swore it was a striper blitz!

I think it will do a number on this year's spawn too.
