April 5 Trout Fishing at Quantico

Got out early with a couple other anglers for Trout heritage day at Quantico and waited for the gate to open.  We decided to stay on the easy path and just fish the reservoir where we just park and fish close by.

Game wardens were all over the place checking 3x over the course of 4 hours.  Quantico requires everyone to go through a process to check in and check out along with base licensing as well as state.  I'm good with that because it keeps anyone who doesn't know the rules out of my way.

Anyway, they had stocked it two days prior without any fishing allowed until Saturday morning, so the bite was on immediately and I caught 4 quickly between using joe fly spinners and powerbait from a float as well as power bait from a carolina rig.  Everyone was catching and it was great to watch the kids get into it.  What makes it unique in my opinion is that we all made sure the kids and families had room to enjoy and everyone shared what was working and what wasn't.  At that location anyway, I don't know about the other stream areas....seems like there are some jerks everywhere you go.

As I was finishing up as my friends had all caught their 6 fish limit and I was content with my 4 I heard a splash that was too heavy to be a small trout.  I looked and saw that the guy next to me had caught a big brown.  So I started taking video for him and we all watched in amazement.  It was a heck of a way to end my day because we were all so happy for him.  The fish looked bigger than his peanut baby his wife was carrying!  We all agreed that it made our day to see this young first time trout fisherman catch such a fish.  I hope he shows his Marine pals the pics and video!

I used to fish the creek there occasionally, didn't even realize they stocked a pond.

That's a beautiful brown! Colored like a wild trout.
