Shad on the Occoquan

Has anyone hit the Occoquan for shad yet this year? Any thoughts on when they will arrive? Next week is warmer weather and maybe that will help.

Re: Shad on the Occoquan

I'm sure they will start running very soon, when the water warms up a bit. Think 50's+. I think it's 42dF today. Air temps help but water temperature is what they go by.

Very soon, we will hear about the 1st shad being caught at Fletcher's.

Only way to know is to know...March 16, 2022 and March 17, 2023 produced shad.

I was thinking about the shad fishing.  Good thinking, Bruce.  I am still after smallies when the opportunity comes.

Warming up a lot the middle of next week. I bet some get caught in the Rapp, I think Occoquan usually gets them just a little bit later.

Totally agree. Let us know if and when you hear something.

They had a great season on the St. Johns River!

I recall that Comeonefish always says that Spring Cherry Blossoms always means shad fishing!

He used to post some on this Forum. After I met him at the Algonkian ramp. He was coming out of th water in a full wet suit after some time exploring what was roaming in the river. He was shivering so I got him in the car and turned up the heat. What a cool dude! And an incredible fisherman.

Re: Shad on the Occoquan

According to Mark Binstead in his !st Shad report; "March 10, 2025. A hickory shad has been caught, marking the start of another highly anticipated shad run on the Potomac."
