3/14/09 Beaverdam Res.

Hey everybody, first-time poster here. Ernie, I think I met you last summer fishing Cedar in Ashburn with my buddy Brian (plan b). I've enjoyed fishing the ABC and Pavilion lakes in Ashburn for a few years now, and I'm sure I've run into many of you guys out there.

Woke up Saturday morning and watched enough Bassmaster reruns on Tivo to convince myself I should ignore the weather man's forecast and wet those lines. Decided to head out to Beaverdam in Ashburn, remembering some pretty awesome early-spring action we had out there last year. The lake was clear, cold and looked to be at about full pool (about 10 feet higher than it was at this time last year). Water at the backs of the creeks and coves was warmer and a bit stained, so I concentrated mainly in these areas. Caught 3 largemouth in about as many hours, the biggest being just shy of 2 lbs. Missed a giant 5lb+ fish right off the bat-she was sitting right at the mouth of a tiny feeder stream in less than a foot of water, nose pointed right up the creek. Had her buttoned up good, but she ended up wrapping me around a rock and snapping 20lb flouro...got a good look at her too, man was I bitter. The other fish came a bit further out in 4-6ft of water, mostly on big boulders and chunk rock next to the creek channel. Took these fish on a jerkbait and green pumpkin shaky head worms. Big mama that broke me off ate a PB&J football jig w/a twin-tail grub trailer. All these baits were worked slow, and strikes came on the pause or when the bait was just sitting still.

Overall, the biggest thing I noticed is that all the activity I saw, whether it be fish strikes or bluegill/baitfish activity, was at the very backs of the creeks and coves. This of course is awesome, as these are my favorite places to fish. I'll definitely be back out there again soon, hopefully Mother Nature will be a bit more cooperative next time. Looking forward to some great spring fishing, hope y'all get a chance to go out n get some too.

Keep em tight,

Mike

PS -Had some pics I wanted to attach but I couldn't figure out how, and input would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Mike,

Way to get 'em! I remember meeting you and welcome. I hope you post often like Brian did. He had Beaverdam dialed it....literally! Did you fish in the  jon boat or some other way?

Re: 3/14/09 Beaverdam Res.

Actually i was on foot, parked by the church at midlake and off of alford rd to get to the creeks. Lots of walking, but it's definitely worth it. Was pretty bummed I couldn't get to my favorite spot by the dam, there was a big no trespassing sign put up in the neighborhood where the cut-thru is. I may have to plan a sneak attack sometime here soon, hehe.  I think Brian's old johnboat is still in the woods somewhere, although exactly where I have no idea. Spent alot of time out there with him last year while the water was really low, so we got to see alot of good rock structure and creek channels. That place is amazing under water, believe me. I'm actually in one of the pics he posted on this site last year, wearing the blue and yellow jacket and holding a nice one down by the dam. Anyway, I'm sure a canoe or johnboat would be the way to go, its just hard to get in there with those big rocks in the way. If anyone is interested in fishing out here and has a boat they can get in there, shoot me an email. I'd be glad to show ya some of the sweet spots we found. Also, can you tell me how to post pics on these reports? I tried cutting and pasting but couldn't get it to work...Thanks.

Mike

Bring some duct tape or patch up because I remember him saying he had to do a bit of work to it and with the weather we had this winter, it may have gotten beaten up again.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

Re: 3/14/09 Beaverdam Res.

Actually I think Brian said he left it uplake somewhere in the woods near where the 2 creeks converge. I'll have to give him a call this weekend and see where. Before he left he gave me the trolling motor, battery and throwables he used for that thing, so if I actually find it I could make it happen. I don't know whether or not it still floats though, and it doesn't have numbers so I'd have to dodge the game wardens if I use the motor. We see what happens, If I find it and get it wet I'll let you guys know.
