I decided to take the afternoon off on such a nice day to go do some fishing locally. Crows nest is just down the road from me, but I never liked rolling the kayak down the long pier to the kayak launch. But, that all changed once I got the new kayak and wheel system, which worked out great and felt more like I only carried 15-20 percent of the weight. Launching off the kayak ramp was easy, but coming back in was not. The time flew by as I really just enjoyed the water system and watching all the Gar spawning.
I ended up with several blow ups and new tactics and one nice snakehead for the freezer. A successful outing. One thing for note though was that at 12 pm on a Wed there were at least 3-4 other kayakers there and by the time I came back 4 hrs later there were at least 4-5 more coming in. So a popular system imho.
Here is the initial view of the crows nest once launched
Had another snake come at me again (another small one), but it was brown in color and I couldn't get a good pic of it
After the first 1.5 hrs of exploring and taking my time enjoying the area (Only been here once before) I got my 1st snakehead of the year
I had a few other blowups afterwards, but only landed the one.
It was easy for me to get home (literally 4 minutes from house) and just leave the fish in the back of the kayak.
Actually used my scale for once! and it came in at 27 inches

Very nice on many accounts!
Now, we need to see pics of the finished product. How will it be cooked?

I like to cube, bread and fry mine. But the wife was suggesting we grill it with marinade. I think I'll try both since these give a lot of filet!

I sauteed the thinner (tail end) parts of the fillets. Grilled the thicker (shoulder) parts. I need to go get me some more...been a while.

I have yet to try snakehead. Have not caught one in a while. I saw one on the UP, so maybe I will get lucky. Will not be out on the boat for a while due to hot weather and low water.

Nice local honey hole
I've mixed my own marinade: soy, teriyaki, fresh grated ginger, fresh garlic, sesame seeds, onion. Then either grilled or smoked. Comes out great

Smart minds think alike
I've also been experimenting with my own teriyaki sauce: Mirin, soy, sugar & ginger

Gents...when cooking carp, we use that marinade and then place the fish on a cedar plank. Once smoked, we eat the cedar plank. ![]()
To truly enjoy the taste of snakehead, minimize the condiments and let the natural taste of channa argus come out.

This is snakehead battered in rice flour with garlic, onion, salt and pepper (all lightly in the same mix), dredged in egg and tossed in panko. Deep fried for 2-3 minutes at 375. Came out perfectly cooked and moist. Not oily or greasy and crisp on the outside. Wife loves it this way!
