Nice Weather 4/4/23

Got out on the water about 7:00am for what I hoped would be a great day of fishing.  First mistake was forgetting my lunch.  Luckily, remembered before I got too far.  Water was a little lower and clearer than last time I got out.  Tried a couple spots where I caught them last week, but only caught this one 11"er on a tube.

He fought good in the current, though.  I spent a while at those two spots and saw Ernie pull up behind me a ways.  I decided to try a different spot and made a run.  I was surprised to not see any other boats.   The bite was slow.  After at least an hour there, I caught this 17.25" smallie that just inhaled the tube.  Never felt the bite until I was reeling it in to re-cast.  Thank goodness I was able to get the hook out without too much trouble and the fish was not bleeding and swam off strong.

There was a deer checking me out from the shore and I heard the Owls calling across the river.  Sun was warm and I was able to ditch the windbreaker.  Carp were very active mid-river and there were some gulls hanging around there also.  I floated out and ran to a different spot.  I got a few taps on a ned, but it was a while before I got my next fish also on a tube.  Little guy.

Did I mention that my boat was taking on water?  It was a slow leak, but need to seal a hole probably from scraping the bottom launching.  I was able to drain it on plane.  I was doing that and I my Riversmallies hat that I have had for over 20 years went flying.  I turned around to find it, but it was  gone in the fast current.

Frustrated, I ran to my next spot.  I got no bites but heard the Tukeys calling.  After a little floating and not finding anything, I called it a day.

It was a great day to be on the water.  Fishing was slow, but Spring is here.  I got off the water about 2pm.  The crew team kids were bailing out a jon boat in the middle of the ramp, which is always fun.

Ernie messaged me about the loss of shoreline structure/habitat.  It is crazy how many 200+ year old trees we have lost over the last 3 years and the river has gotten wider and shallower.  It is really sad to see.

Re: Nice Weather 4/4/23

what a day to be out!  I bet it had to be so cool with all the sights and sounds.  The pig of a SM inhaled that lure....great that you were able to return it unscathed.  I'm not fully retired yet, so more waiting on my part.  This year I made a promise to myself to enjoy being outdoors more and that means fishing more.  I'm looking forward to seeing the carp and gar spawn this year.  Always making such a ruckus in the tall grass!

Gotta love when that happens.

We fished like it was later in the year and paid the price of a skunk...

What I don't understand is how active smallies are in the fall when the water drops under 50dF. Here, the water temp is rising to almost 60dF and they are still hunkered down, so it appeared to me.

But...when you fish the full moon, this stuff happens. To me anyway.

Good job catching some.

Time to go fishin' again!
