Knots

What is the recommended/best knot to tie to attach a mono or fluoro leader to a braid line? If there are many alternatives, I'd prefer the simplest one. Also, how long should the leader be?
Thanks,
Bruce

Re: Knots

I like a uni to uni connection. Sometimes I add a drop of super glue to put my mind at ease.

Re: Knots

I use the uni to uni, and have never had one fail. Takes time to tie it (as much as 10 minutes with warm fingers) but it seems worth the effort. Leader can be as long as you like. I usualy leave it long to keep from having to retie aonther uni/uni.  Ernie prefers a 2" leader for leader shy fish.

Re: Knots

Blood knot is easier than uni to uni and it holds just fine....glue is good if you have it available but I rarely use it.

I have seen a uni to uni fail because the braid cut through the mono.

Go to animatedknots.com for easy instructions.

No sense in tying a new leader if you still have some nylon showing....especially if the fish are leader shy.

Did you mean 2 feet?

Re: Knots

Double uni is my go-to. I have found it is important to match the line diameter of the braid to certain lb test of leader material in order to prevent the braid from cutting the leader. Here's some common setups I have used:

Finesse: 1/8-1/4oz bait     12-20lb braid, 8-12lb leader

Regular: 1/4-3/4oz bait     20-50lb braid, 12-17lb leader

Heavy duty: 3/4oz+ bait/flipping heavy matted vegetation     50-65lb braid, 17-25lb leader

90% of the time I am using the regular setup or the finesse deal on a spinning rod. 50/17lb on the bait caster and 15/10lb on the spinny pole are my go-to's. If water clarity <1ft i will use straight 15lb test braid with no leader.

There's a helluva story behind that 2 inch leader, leading to Ernie's first personal best of 2013

Re: Knots

Bruce- Bob is refererencing my big striper that was caught when I was too lazy to retie the leader. After the knot was tied, there was only 2 inches left on the leader. It has become a standing joke.

Re: Knots

I have never used a leader except in surf fishing. It does makes however if you are fishing schoolie convict bass. That couple feet of mono/flouro makes it easy to lift the fish out of the water and quickly release him. In the surf the heavy 40lb plus leader is used to absorb the shock of the cast 8nbait and help drag the fish out out of the surf. In the case of the surf I use a slim beauty or a double uni. With flouro to braid a double uni is quick and easy.

But I still do not use a leader in most applications.

Re: Knots

I've been using the surgeon's knot (with 4-6 loops) that I learned from Mike and it hasn't failed on me. The best part is it's one of the easiest to tie on the water.

Re: Knots

I am lazy and I use a 6 turn surgeon's knot. When I fly fished I used this knot (two or three) turns for attaching tipet to the leader. It holds fine and I can tie it in the dark! Uni-uni makes me feel like I need a third hand.

Re: Knots

Quite a diversity of opinions. I guess the answer is to go with something that you have confidence in.

Re: Knots

I also like leaders to break off a lure easier when snagged.....but I don't use them all the time.

Michael is right about tying a double uni, that is why I like a blood knot. Just make sure you do it right and tighten it because they are known to slip if you missed a step.

Re: Knots

I use the fast tie tool and use a blood knot. It is like a third hand and you can tie it in a few seconds once you get the hang of it. I have even cut wind knots out of braid and rejoined the line using this. Knots slip right through the guides.
