5-29-09, Chesapeake Bay Light Tackle Fishing report

Today, I had a great invitation to fish the Chesapeake Bay with Rob Allen. We met up with Capt. Brady Bounds at 0600 at the Solomon's ramp.....

....and within minutes we were throwing top water baits. It did not take Rob long to get hooked up!

After a few more casts, we went out of the river and fished some nice structure near the Navy Base but we couldn't get them to bite so off to the Cedar Point rips which are just at the mouth of the Patuxtent River. Capt. Brady showed us a few subtleties on how to fish the rips a little differently and before long, I hooked up.

Rob and I hammered the rips and we were satisfied that we "got it". By the way, we had agreed that this was going to be more of a "learning" trip than a "catching" trip. I say that because we left the rips with the fish still biting and we would go that again 2 or 3 more times. We had some water to cover and some lessons to learn. The next place we went was easy one!

When you see this, you will catch fish and that is what we did. On our drifts at this place, we probably caught 20 fish, many being keeper size (or close to it). We left with the fish biting.

Here is the good Captain teaching us not to forgo spots at the Calvert Nuclear Plant rips....

And here is Cove Point light....sometimes we need to slow down to smell the salt!

Right before we were to pick up and head over to the other side of the bay, a fog bank rolled in....eerie! This is Capt. Pete Wahlberg and his crew (we knew 2 of the guys, small world).

As always, I tried out some different baits other that what the captain recommended and had moderate success.

The last place we went to was the Honga River. We could have spent a week there....Rob hooked up with another striper....

Lots of water and some great scenery!!

We tried to find some speckled trout but we were unsuccessful...for this trip. I know we will be back.

For the day, we caught between 50-60 stripers with Rob catching 3 to my 2.

The day was perfect, the bay was flat calm, the teacher was outstanding (over 20 years of experience on the bay....I highly recommend him).

What more can a man ask for??

It was great!

We talked about you when we left the fish to go to another place. We envisioned you begging us to get back to the fishin' hole!

Ernie -

You always make a great crew - and I was happy to have you along -

I will book another trip with Brady for sure - He was pretty darn good - I learned alot about water I had been fishing for several years -

Glad we beat the weather that hit later - been that kind of Spring!

Talk to you soon.

I wondered about that and forgot to ask him. What does it mean?

I forgot to mention that the rod Rob was using was being broken in on this trip. It's 7' Hugh Miller Custom rod. Very nice!

It was a tongue in cheek deal with some guides. Him and Norm got them made up to upset the DNR.
