Been a very good start to the year in the Chesapeake. Made my first trip on 1/27 and I've tagged over 100 speckled trout since, and a few reds too. Stripers have been conspicuously absent aside from one in the 25lb range I got back in February. Most fish were caught on homemade twitchbaits but I caught a lot on soft plastics as well. I'm hoping the very mild winter means there will be lots of trout around throughout the Summer. As good as the winter bite is, I live for that Summertime topwater action!
Freaky eye on this one.
Tubes were very effective in deeper water.
This is a 25.5" male speck. It is very rare for males to get that big, they usually don't top 20".
Rainy day. The bite was hot though.
Big striper on a little homemade trout lure.

That's awesome! What is that homemade trout lure made out of? Is it wood?

Bryan, you have them locked in! I love seeing those beautiful specks you pull in every year. But these are huge. Those toothy points on the front always makes me laugh and think of Olaf from frozen (big front tooth)...yes...I said it. haha

I make them out of resin. The internals are wire, foam, lead, and various foils. I make a ton of different patterns.
I wanted a bait that wiggled on the fall and it took some trial and error to get a lure I was happy with. I made them for specks but I've caught all kinds of fish on them.

Nice job.
Hope some of those fish saw some hot grease

That's really cool! I do wood working as another hobby (like I needed another expensive hobby) and have always thought it would be cool to make some wooden lures.

All tagged and released. I don't care much for specks on the table, but I'll keep some reds for the grill occasionally.

Those look awesome. Congrats!

Excellent fishing!! Well done. I am with you, much prefer a red to a spec for the table.
