7-13-23, UP

As I do  every time I fish, I go get my boat from the barn (Algonkian storage) the day before so I can charge the batteries.

When I got there yesterday, this is what I found!

I've yet to figure out how that could happen. I always put the wheel on the chock. I've emailed Algonkian to see if they might have an explanation.

Back to the fishing report.

Andrew and I chatted back and forth as to where to go (and what were the lunch options) and he chose White's Ferry. So we went there. Lunch would be at Roadhouse Jerk. Andrew was exited for some Jamaican food.

We splashed the boat (in very skinny water) and off we went. Water temp was 79dF.

Andrew was throwing a white buzz bait and at 7:45a, he had the skunk off the boat!

Nothing else there so we headed up river. It was shallow up there for sure but we figured out where they were and started catching them up.

Andrew  kept catching them on the buzz bait!

I then took my skunk off and it was off to the races!

All the fish were fat and plumply. And they fought hard today!

We saw a lot of fish today...some   (smaller ones) in schools of a dozen. It was cool to see.

At one point, Andrew was hooked up with a nice fish, who was running all over the place trying to get away,  when I hooked up. "Double", I yelled. And then it jumped. Andrew gasped when he saw the leap (he's still fighting his fish) and then...he spit the hook. mad What a cluster!!

We kept seeing fish and I saw a pair swim by the boat. Usually, when that close, you ain't gonna get 'em. I made a pitch (too close to cast) and sure enough, one of the fish took the bit and ran. And broke me off!! mad mad Double cluster!

All in all, I actually lost 5-6 fish. But those two are still in the memory bank. Still, a cool experience.

We heard a chopper coming down the river and Andrew says. "Ernie, look!".

That dude was flying really low! Cool to see...

We caught fish just about everywhere we tried. Except when we tried the MD side a couple of times, it was too murky over there. The Monocacy must have burped.

Most fish were caught in relatively shallow water and they liked wood and rocks just the same.

I venture to say that Andrew caught just shy of 20 and I was in the dozen range.

No biggies (except the ones that got away lol). But they were all a great fight and liked going under my boat. Andre's near 15"er was a heck of a fight on the ML rod.

We quit just after 12:30p. Water temp was 84dF.

The weather was surprisingly nice. When it started to get hot, we got a breeze. We didn't melt until we got up on the ramp. Then, it was HOT!

We were getting ready to go and I told Andrew that I wanted to call ahead to get some Jamaican meat patties to take home. Man, I'm glad I made that call. The recording said that they were closed today for some construction and would not be open again until Saturday! Yikes!

Luckily, the WF Grill was open so we went there. They were really busy but I told Andrew that it would be worth it.

We both got burgers!

And we both had a great lunch!

Today was a great day of catching and also catching up with Andrew. We both paid our respects to good friends that left us too early, Carl and Rob.

Nice! I can't see how your wheel would have fallen out of that pod on it's own or even with heavy winds, but you never know.  Just glad you didn't have any chewed up wiring that killed the boat.  A great day to be out for sure.  What do you think is the issue with all the line breaks?  And it's crazy how low that h60 is, but I can confirm that Army h60 pilots are among the best and a heck of a ride if you can get em.  Better than a roller coaster without question!

The H60 guys looked like they were enjoying the river. It was cool to see.

Fishing rocky areas makes for weak leaders at times. I had not checked it but when the fish ate, he made an about turn and that could have caused it. It we neat to see it all because of the clear water and close proximity.

Great job, guys!  That is some great action for the dog days.  So good to see the numbers of smaller fish you report.  How is the grass up there?

Nicely done guys, bummer about losing the big ones as you don't forget them that quickly!!!!!

I was out on a float not too far away from you yesterday.  No fish on a choppo but they were hitting flukes for myself and Leon off and on all day. Maybe I should have tried a buzzbait

Had a blast. Thanks for taking me out, Ernie! Really wish you landed the first one but at least we got a clear view of it when it jumped out of the water to say 'byeeee'. lol

Grass wasn't too thick, at least in comparison to what i've seen in the past. Patches here and there but lots of clear areas.

haha. I just love throwing buzzbaits, especially on smallie trips. almost to a fault. Im stubborn and am addicted to it so I will throw it almost in any condition. I remember throwing them in later winter/early spring and my friends were like WTF but i caught a few soooooo jokes on themmmm.

we had a lot of luck on lighter colored lures. as Ernie mentioned, the stretches we were successful on were with clear water. never really tried to throw the buzz on the murkier side as we were catching and had no reason to move.

That was my thought

Hate those heartbreaks.

Leon had a pig on and I saw a big ol' pike came up and rip it off the hook.

That was really neat to see!

We should have also emphasized that we did a lot of sight casting and catching yesterday. It was cool!
