6-29-23, UP

It's been a long 10 days since I've been out (for a myriad of reasons) so Bev came over at 6:30a and off we went to The Filling Co. Their breakfast sammies are good! Bev had his usual bacon, egg & cheese croissant and I had the Taylor ham with egg & cheese on toasted multi grain bread. These guys outdo most breakfast places.

Last night, for giggles, I checked the Solunar predictions and they said that today would be a "poor" fishing day! mad When I told Bev, he said, "why did you even tell me that?". It was also 4 days from a full moon. On top of that, we were to have a Code Red air day today which was later changed to Purple!. Yikes!!

But...we needed to go fishing.

We splashed the boat without incident and floated down a bit while I  got stuff ready and rigged a rod for Bev.

I had him throwing the Whopper Plopper. He only got 1 sniff. I was throwing the belly weighted swim hook with a Berkley Max Scent Flat worm.

It did not take long for me to get smacked but I soon realized it was not a smallie!

Still...a nice fight, a beautiful fish and the skunk is off!

We then moved to a place that usually needs more water but I was able to get the smallie skunk off as well while there.

We drifted the middle and caught a couple.

At this point, the only bites we had were the caught fish. It was eerily quiet and of course, very smoky.

After a brief break in action, we went back at it! But this time, I went a little further up.

Bev had noticed some nice shoreline structure so we started to hit it. We got nothing but 1 fish!

A nice almost 15"er!

Then we came up on a small creek. Just above it, I noticed some darker green water and decided to throw in there.

Bam! Not a smallie but another nice tug on the line!

This hole was no bigger than the limo so I threw in there again and another bam! Not a smallie...

...but a nice 19" walleye!

I told Bev to throw back in there and he gets the smallie!

We could not believe that we got 3 different fish species in such a small hole!

As it got smokier, these guys started staring at us!

They saw dinner!

We caught a few more and then moved and we caught a few more.

Earlier, I had told Bev that quitting time would be high noon. Not one minute past. Once I said that, our old baseball competitive juices started to flow.

At 1st, I had Bev down 2-0 and 4-2. He then tied it and we see sawed back and forth until he got a 2 fish lead. I would catch one, and he would match it.

I then landed #7 (he had 8) and we had about 9 minutes to go before the time ran out. I had 4 bites during this time including 2 fish that were on momentarily but I just could not tie it up.

So we quit with Bev winning the match by 1 fish! BTW, we do this for entertainment. I get as much pleasure watching him catch and land a fish as I do when I get one.

Earlier in the morning, Bev had mentioned that there was only 1 boat and 1 kayak out on the water. But when we headed back, we saw a couple more boats and a fleet of kayaks. Hope they had some luck because by this time, the air was very stale and smoky.

We retrieved the boat without incident except..I heard something. A nice fella says, "hey, you have a log stuck behind your tire!

It was jammed in tight. After assessing the situation, we tied a rope to it and Bev baked up the trailer very slowly and we were fortune to get the log out without damage. A couple of fellas actually congratulated us!

Lunch was at Bilsted's Bignets where we had their version of a Cubano sandwich. I guess it was so good that we forgot to take pics!

Great day out with Bev!!

Great report. That walleye would have gone in the cooler if I caught it.

I gave it some thought but didn't want to mess with it. They are good to eat for sure!!

A nice trifecta of a day

I'm with Bryan, that walleye would have seen hot grease.  We had a nice walleye appetisers one night and dinner another night last week.  God made walleye for the fillet knife
