Occoquan River 4/10/23

Got out with my grandson Emerson for a shot at some shad.  We got on the water about 8:50am and were fishing a little while after.  There was one boat out in the middle just before the footbridge.  We decided to anchor before them.  It did not take long for Emerson to hook the first shad.  It was a chunky 15"er.

Unfortunately, that was it for a long spell.  We moved back to near Bob's spot and other than a close call with the power lines, no hookups.  We moved up to the top and just had a couple swipes.  The winds were light and the tide was not really pushing much.  Water was pretty clear.

I felt bad for Emerson, because we did not catch many last year and I wanted him to catch more .  We moved back to the first spot and after a while, Emerson hooked a nice 17"er

We were 2-2 for a bit and then I started hooking a couple more.  Emerson had been munching on all the snacks and he seemed to be losing his mojo.  I caught a couple bigger ones and handed him the rod to at least fight a couple.  I told him we would get lunch at 1:00pm and after catching a couple more, we headed back.  I let him drive back to the ramp.  We ended up with only about 10 shad, but really enjoyed the nice weather and time on the water.  We hooked a couple on the bigger Accetta spoon, which was cool.  I had put gold foil on the back side of the silver spoon.  That seemed to hook bigger fish when they bit.

Lunch was great and the Brickmaker Burger put him down for the count on the drive home.  I had the Turkey Rachel sandwich.  I will post a couple more pics after Emerson sends them to me.

Great time overall, but we did not get dialed on the shad.  I did not see anyone really tear them up, but some did better than us.  Not many boats out.

Very cool gramps!

I had that sammie by mistake a couple of trips back. Not what I ordered but it was good.

Hmmm...didn't see anyone up top! We need some rain to move the water a bit...

We tried up there, but no love.  Really strange day for getting on a consistent bite.  The guys that were in the middle tried up there, but did not stay and left after that.
