Monday Carp Report

It is a gorgeous day and no way could I let it go by with out fishing. Head to favorite spot and setup. Had to remove my fleece as I was very warm. Sun was nice and wind was non-existent. Started slow and had a couple of hits, but no runners. Re baited several times  and then it happened..zing ---fish on. I am by myself so it gets a little tough as this is a big carp. Get it all the way to shore and slide the net under it and hook pulls out. Off it goes. Missed with the net. Ended up with 7 fish hooked and 4 landed. I had doubles too. Second line goes off while fighting another. Almost spools me by the time I lose the another carp at the shore. Pick up the rod from the pod and start reeling up and bingo fish is still on. It runs into some rip rap rocks and stops. Can not move it...14 lb line with a 6lb leader. Hmm. Put rod back on pod and set fish runner on and wait. About 10 minutes later carp starts swimming away. This one I land.
What a fun day.

I'm still amazed that there is such good carp fishing during the winter!  I never knew and am just thrilled to hear of your success Capt Mike!

Re: Monday Carp Report

What baits are you using? I've never fished for carp in the winter so I'm curious as to what they go for.

Fake corn and pack bait. Recipe for pack bait is in Joe Bruces book Carp 101.

It is cheap and easy to make and keeps well. But fresh made bait works best.

Re: Monday Carp Report

Nice Bugle mouth bass!

When I targeted carp, I'd use a fatty lunchmeat like bologna or a piece of hot dog.  Great way to learn how to back reel a spinning reel
