Occoquan 4/12/22

I decided to try the shad fishing with waters falling and clearing after the rains.  I got on the water about 7:45am and had 7 fish by 8:00am.  I started up above the footbridge.  No toads, but nice chunky Hickories around 16".

I had 20 by 9:00am.  It rained, but not hard and I hardly noticed with the good action.  I had about a 1/4 oz. Shad dart above a gold spoon to start.  I did not try anything else for a while, because it was working well.  Had many fish on consecutive casts.  2 boats got on the water before me, but only one was shad fishing and he anchored between the bridges.

My line was twisting some, so I tried another setup and the fish did not seem to mind.  The length did not vary much, but there were some chunks.

I dropped back to follow the fish and had 40 by 10:45am.  A few more boats came up, but it was not crowded.  I had 50 by 11:20am and decided to eat my Subway sub.  The bitees picked up around the changing tides and dropped off at slack tide.

After lunch it slowed and I was a little under 60 when I decided to move up where I saw fish jumping.  I wanted to get to 65, but the fish were still biting.  I passed 65 and was floating back with the tide.  I decided to try to get to 70.  I hooked a fish and this is what I had.

My first landed double, and at 71, I had to keep going.  The wind had picked up and there were more boats coming.  I floated and made it to 75 at 1:00pm and called it quits.

Great day on the river.  Lots of fish for everyone!

Nicely done!

There was no way I could get my boat up in the white water up above the foot ridge last Friday. It was raging!

That's the slowest time for me.

You probably saw Capt. Rich Johnson in the River Rocket up there. He shad fishes but usually has a catfish line out.

Time to go fishin' again!

I did see him.  He came up past me when I was above the footbridge.  He pretty much stayed there.

I will go to Brickmakers, but not by my lonesome.  Had half a sub from yesterday, so that worked.

I know 2 things about tomorrow. 1) you will have a great day and 2) it will be more crowded with the warm weather.
