After missing the last 2 Fridays due to wind, I was finally able to take my grandson, Emerson, out for the day. I picked him up at 10am and we were on the water by around 11am. It was a beautiful day with mostly bluebird skies and temps up to the mid-80's. We ran upriver and started on thee MD side. Got visited by DNR about 30 minutes into our fishing. All good.
I let Emerson know the fishing had been slow, but he got the skunk out of the boat with a little guy who bit a finesse keitech on an underspin.
He is 12 and as tall as me now. We worked that shore and I got one little sunfish on a crappie jig and then a surprise 15.5" smallie on the same jig on an ultralight setup. It put up a good fight on 4 pound test. Emerson netted it after a little pullage.
That fish was in a shaded wood area near shore. The fishing really slowed after that. We ate our lunch and saw Eagles (at least 5), deer, Blue Herons and an Osprey throughout the day.
I let him try different lures (buzzbait, teeny torpedo, crankbait) and let him drive with the gas motor. He hooked another fish on the UL with a little Ika, but lost it at the boat. I hooked at least one other fish and lost it at the boat. All dinks. Great afternoon and we were off the water a little after 5:30pm.
