5/24/19 Upper Potomac

The plan was to get out early and do a half day before the holiday weekend crowd.  We had some pretty heavy thunderstorms last evening, but the gauge at Point of Rocks showed no rise.  The level was about 4 feet.  I was on the water by 5:45am and there was nice green water color and a beautiful sunrise.

I tried topwater for a bit, but got no fish.  I tried a couple other baits and had a fish bite off the tail of a swim bait, but no hookups.  The forecast was for a cold front to blow in with NW winds of 10-15mph.  The wind started picking up and I knew the water would get muddy from the storm runoff.  I worked an island shoreline with a spinnerbait and caught a 17" catfish with a full belly after about 10 casts.

At least I got bit.  I worked the shoreline with the spinnerbait, swimbait and cranks mostly.  I got no other bites.  The wind was blowing hard and the water was getting muddier.  After I worked most of the island, I decided to move up river to see if I could get out of the wind or find clearer water.  The MD shoreline was a little shielded from the wind, but was muddy.  I ran over to the VA side and it was getting muddy from the waves.  I stayed off the shore a little and cast a Limber-Blade spinnerbait with a large hammered gold willow and Colorado blades.  I had a keitech swim bait on for a trailer.  I started throwing it toward the middle of the river and about 5 casts in, I hooked a feisty 15" smallie.  That was a pleasant surprise.

I floated and cast the spinnerbait for maybe an hour, but no more bites.  The water was pretty muddy at this point, so I decided to get off the water at 11:00am.  I only caught the 2 fish, but it was not a bust.

Happy Memorial Day weekend to all!

Nice sunrise pic...and smallie eye!!

The place was busy when I dropped the boat off this afternoon. Would definitely test our patience!

Time to go fishin' again!
