I went down to SoFL to help run a Wounded Heroes Fishing Project fishing event (Palm Springs Veterans and Family Peacock Bass fishing) on Saturday. Of course, I had to get a little fishing in so after I landed in FLL in the early afternoon, I proceeded to meet Capt. Mark Hall to see if we could get on a Peacock Bass or 2. It had stormed while I was flying and a front moved in as I landed. Luckily, things cleared up.
This is the scenery....
Saw a lot of iguanas as well. Reminded me of when I was a kid in Cuba.
So we started the hunt as it's a sight game when targeting them on a fly (using a 7wt).
We saw one in a cranny and Mark says to throw the fly. Sure, there are rocks, bushes and tree limbs in the way but you have to make the cast. For this one, it was at least 30 casts before I finally pissed it off enough to bite me!
We moved to look for more but it was tough. They were hiding in the deep deep but I was not about to change to conventional.
Then we came up on a "lake" and found a few more. Just like the other one, you literally had to hit him in the head to get them to strike. And he did!
I did throw blindly at a known area and got 4-5 nips but we never saw a fish and they never got hooked up.
Then Mark sees this!
Hmmm, what could it be?
A manatee! We spent a god 20 minutes just admiring it as he/she floated around.
No one else was fishing on Thursday but they were out on Sunday.
This is the line to get into the ramps (15 ramps) on Sunday afternoon around 1:30pm!!
BTW, we had a decent showing at the Wounded Heroes Fishing Project event but only 1 fish was caught, an oscar. I was not able to get a pic.
Some other pictures are on Facebook at fishingcommunity.org's page.

More cool stuff on this trip. On the way home (to mamma's place) on Saturday, I stopped in at BPS and Darrell Gwynn (former drag racer) was giving a seminar on fishing from a wheelchair.
We have a wheelchair accessible 44' catamaran that takes veterans out. Next trip is May 18. Some of these guys got invited!

This is a Cuban roast pork done Asian style w/ fried rice
This is a short rib burger w/ a chunk of fried cheese on top
These are Peruvian style short ribs on yellow peeper infused mashed taters.
Yea...it was all good!

When you go, let me know. And if you have no one to go with. I will go. Capt. Mark is a great guy and guide.

I don't know how they do it....they actually are waiting for a parking spot to open up. And there are many!

I know you love to fish, but I think you love the dining even more. Just a little envious....

Great report, that looked like a ton of fun and the food looks so good. That picture of the line for the boat ramps is giving me anxiety though.

They wait for over an hour to launch....yikes!

Do the peacocks have bonier mouths than a largie or smallmouth?

Great report. Yes that line of boats to launch reminds of the 4th of July at Fort Washington Marina.
Gives me a knot in the back of my neck.

Don't think so. I catch them on a fly and they hook up nicely. Most of the misses are because they will swat at 'em 'cause they are being pestered.
When I lip them, they feel the same as LMB and SMB.

I tangled with peacocks once in Hawaii and it was a lot of fun! We were sight fishing and the guide taught me that you had to set the hook as soon as you saw the mouth open up for the bait/lure. They're that quick.

Yep...anticipating is part of the game. That's why I made so many tosses!
