Greg and I were supposed to work the Wounded Heroes Fishing Project Shad Gala today (get vets on some shad from my boat) but high water and the weather forecast forced a cancellation.
So we started looking at the weather and came to the conclusion that we might get a morning of fishing in at the "O". We rolled the dice and the numbers came up a winner!
We were on the water by 7:30a or so and we were the only boat that went up to the shad hole. There was a kayaker there but he was looking for stripers. And it stayed like that (no one else) for a while.
The tide was up but nothing would bite at 1st. We did manage to hook 2-3 shad but they all came unbuttoned. It was not looking promising.
Finally, I took the skunk off with this feisty blue gill (species#1)!
I then took the herring (species #2) skunk off as well as the shad (species #3) skunk.
I was up 4 or 5 to 0 on Greg and talking smack again and he promptly took his shad skunk off!
And another nice one!
I noticed that the fish were smaller today, we only managed 1 over 17" (Greg)!
The bite came in waves but they were less aggressive today. Weather? Full moon? Poor fishermen?
Then Greg caught a smallie (species #4)...
...and a blue cat (species #5).
A bit later, 2 guys came up and we chatted. They were bummed that they left their shad darts at home so I gave them a 1/2 dozen so they could fish. They thanked us and did so 3-4 times. They were elated. We did see them catch a few so that was cool.
Greg started to get the hang of it and the catching was decent but not hot.
Next species (#6) for Greg was a LMB...
...followed by a striper (species #7)!
We decided to drop down a bit and I caught a few more but were were watching the weather. That didn't matter to Greg though. He just said he was hungry so we called it a day around 12:30p and put the boat away.
In total, we caught 40 shad plus the BG, herring, cat, SMB, LMB and striper! White was the best color!
As we were waiting for our burgers (they were REALLY good), it started sprinkling and all of the sudden, there was a crowd at the ramp with everyone trying to get off the water before the rains.
The wind forecast for today was a bust! They called for 15-25 and we saw a top wind of maybe 10-12.
Great day out...the catching before the storm!

That is a very cool morning of fish catching. You got the good karma by giving those shad darts. Great job! Might be a while before the water clears up again.

Looks like Greg has been taking lessons from Tyler.
Well...a little bit. If Tyler had been there, he would have kicked our butts.
As it was, Greg got Big Fish (17.25") and Multi Species. I got him on shad, 32-8.

Water looked decent but lots of surface trash from the tide exchange with Potomac.
We did hit 62df water today but the buoy only shows 59.

Love the report Ernie, but you are publishing FAKE NEWS! I appreciate the effort to hide this fact, but your report neglected to mention (until several replies later) that you KICKED MY BUTT in the quantity category 32-8. And that is just fine, because it is all about the adventure. I had a great time, as always. Saw 3 Bald Eagles (4 if you count Ernie), caught a bunch of different species, caught the big fish, didn't get struck by lightning or a tornado, and didn't even get wet till we got back to the boat ramp. And when Ernie is catching lots of fish he giggles like a little girl! Keeps me entertained while I am NOT catching fish. Plus we had a great lunch at the new snack shack! Nice mixed bag!
Man I was all set to go to the O for shad fishing from the shore early Friday morning. I was going to get there before sunrise and fish until my arm fell off. As fate would have it my wife caught the flu pretty bad so I had to stay home and take care of her and the kids.

Brickmakers Cafe...right there at the ramp. The park expanded with a wedding/meeting hall and the cafe.
