John and I got on the water shortly after 8:30a and headed up to Hickory land.
On the way, we spotted 2 friends, Dave Antos and Ted Shaw. They had been catching a few.
The catching was a bit slow at 1st and finally, I connected.
And a couple more....
Then John connected....
And a bunch more...
And then a double on my bait caster!
More catching!
We did much better in the morning than in the afternoon (stopped fishing at 2:30p).
Then I got hit by a channel cat!
Nice tussle on the L spinning rod.
And back to the hicks....
Most of the fish were FAT and we had a bunch over 17. Over 50 hickories in total!
Dave and Ted getting one...
Even got one on a fly!
Back at it!
Then, I get a different kind of hit and the drag is screaming! I am using an XLight bait caster.
The fish barely fit in the net...John did a great job hauling him in!
We didn't measure or weight but at least 10lbs! He hit a shad spoon of all things...
And then...the freight train hit. I got hammered by something big! It hit one of George's crappie jigs. I was using my light spinning rod with a 1000 reel. At 1st, I thought I had the battle won. We saw a shadow and it was big. No way we are going to get this in the net so John got the boga grip out. After that fish got close, he started running down river and I had to chase him using the trolling motor. Finally, he just shook and as i was getting him near the surface, the hook popped out. The fight lasted 10 minutes and my forearm was screaming.
We did catch a couple more hicks after that and called it a day.
High tide was around noon and the SE winds kept it high even as we were leaving.
We commented that the fishing was a bit slow but 50 hickories and some cats ain't a bad way to spend 6 hours.

Ernie had the hot hand today, with 29 shad. I dubbed him the catfish king after he hooked and fought the third one that put up a heck of a fight! Good time and good fishing!

Great report. I think that's the fattest shad I've ever seen.

Nice fish, that blue on the light set up musta been real fun...what do you think you had on the last biggun that got away?
Also, what's your BC light set up?

I think it was huge blue but I will tell everyone it was a 40# striper!

It's an X Light Mod. St. Croix Legend Inshore Gulf Series. It's 6' 6". It was built for speckled trout fishing in the gulf. Have it paired with a newer Revo SX and have it tuned in pretty well. Only a few backlashes throwing double darts...usually against the wind.
I use it for jerk baits as well. Throws like a cannon.

I can always use 'em for sure if you are making some. That's a great color. And chart/white. Or blue.
My blue/white dart with a white tail was the big winner yesterday. I had to change it out ( all the hair fell off) to another b/w but with chart tail. It did well too.

For some reason, we have been getting lots of fatties up there. That's why we took so many pics. Fatness abound!

Thanks for the report! I'm planning to go shad fishing early Fri morning. I've been contemplating whether to go to Chain Bridge, which is my normal spot, or the O which I've never fished. I'm leaning towards the O and now I just need to figure out what the shore access is like. Any help will be much appreciated I hope they'll still be running on Friday.

They are in full force right now but so is the water. Not sure Little Falls will be under 5' by Friday. And not sure about the "O's" condition after yesterday's T-Storms. Bob and I will find out Wednesday.
There a re only a few shore spots at the "O" but very limited at high tide which drowns most of the rocks.

Thanks Ernie. Looking forward to your Wednesday report!
