5-2-18, Occoquan

'Twas a great day of fishing for many reasons!

1. It was my 1st time out on the boat since my back fusion surgery 23 days ago....

2. We caught 95 hickory shad (Bob had 64, I had 31), 2 teeny stripers and an Occoquan drum!

While Bob had the most (by far), I did get the biggest!

Somehow, the picture of the "O" drum did not turn out....never seen a mud shad that big

3. Bob and I used BFS and I won't be looking back any time soon. What a blast catching shad on L and ML baitcasters! As a matter of fact, I only caught1 striper using the spinning rod, barely threw it.

4. The rod I bought from Mark (L) is a 1st Class finesse weapon. Terrific tool!

We did run in to John Odenkirk and they were giggling at all the snakeheads they were shocking up. This had no effect on our fishing!

We fished from 8:30a until 1pm, never felt the 90 degree heat until we got back on to the parking lot. Water was 63-64df and stained a bit.

What are the specs on your BFS rod? I'm eyeing up the St. Croix Premier 7' ML/F, rated for 3/16-5/8oz.

Also, how much longer do you think the shad will be there for? Might make a trip with my boys to get them some pullage.

Dobyns Champion Extreme DX 701C 7', 1/16-3/8, LF

TFO GLS SWC 693-1, 6' 9", ML, 1/8-3/8

I had the Tatula w/ the Dobyns but will put that on the TFO as I like my Revo SX better (I use then exclusively and have them very fine tuned).

Bob's BFS rod seemed a bit softer and it was certainly paying off for him.

Last year at this time, it was slim pickings. Yesterday was really good. They should be here for a bit but ya never know until you go.

Great news Ernie

I'm more excited that you got out so soon after your back was worked on than the fish, but hey, nice fish too

Me too....it was a rush. I'm a little stiff but gotta get back in fishing shape somehow. "O" fishin' is easy, all no wake.
