Upper Potomac 5/1/18

With the nice weather finally here, I decided to brave the slightly high and stained water to catch some Smallies.  I stopped in Goose Creek for a bit, but nothing biting there.  I proceeded to my high water spot and it was a good move.  I lost 2 hard hitting smallies right off the bat.  They liked the swim bait on George's SWM jig.  I got the third one, a feisty 14 incher.

Followed that one up with nice 15"er with red eyes.

I lost one more before that spot dried up, so off to spot 2.  Turkeys were calling on the island I fished next to, which was pretty cool.
I moved down a bit and settled in to spot 2.  Fish did not bite right away.   I caught this 17"er the was blind in one eye just slowly swimming the bait back.

I caught a smaller one, about 13", then ate lunch.

After lunch I tried a rebel deep diver, banging it off the rocks.  Second cast, in an eddy, I started to reel and this one slammed it and fought hard in the current.

Then I tried a jig Jezur67 from Riversmallies traded me.  About my second or third cast, I caught another 13"er that was fat from eating craws.

The bites turned off and I moved to spot 3.  It was a smaller eddy with some wood in it toward the end of the island.  I was not sure it would hold fish, but cast #2 into the top part of the eddy with a Skinny Dipper got a tap and it was a LM.  Just 13", but nice to see up there.

I cast back further behind the wood next to shore and it got a solid hit.  It was an 18"er and fought hard in the current.  Another fish blind in one eye!  It also had something sticking in it's side.

I tried to go back up to spots 1 and 2, but it only resulted in a jammed anchor that I had to cut off to get loose.  I started the ride back and tried another island that I fish, but water was too fast.  I did get a miraculous recovery after having to break off a crank stuck in a tree branch.  It fell in the water and I caught up with it after about 5 minutes.

Eagles were out in numbers, saw 2 small otters or water rats (brown) in Goose Creek.  Nice, warm day.  I ended up with 8 fish total between 13-18".  River should be good by the weekend or next week.  Crew Team is working out of Algonkian, which is a pain.  They left 3 jon boats blocking the ramp (ugh).  Relocated from Beaverdam Reservoir.

Great report and pics, nice smallies too! I haven't done any smallmouth fishing this year, I need to do something about that.
