Well. the water level and weather finally cooperated, so I hit the UP river for the first time this year. Beautiful afternoon (a little chilly) and the water color was a nice clearish green. It is still up a little over 3 feet at POR. I did my usual float and after trying several lures, I put on a craw colored Fat A 4F and was bouncing the top of the rocks. After I anchored to get my bearings straight, I hooked my first smallie of 2018. It measured 18.5" and pulled pretty good for a cold fish. Water is still just below 50 degrees. I could not get the fish to stay straight for a picture. but took 2.
I floated the rest of the island and hooked a 15"er a 14" and later a 14.5". I only took a picture of the 15".
I tried the middle of the river and got nothing on a tube and the crank kept getting fouled in old dead grass. I decided to go back and float part of the island and ended up hooking one more at 15.5" in a Rebel craw.
All fish were cold, but bit a moving bait. There was the billion bug hatch going on and they got all over everything in the boat. There were lots of migratory ducks (grey, white and black). Lots of wildlife active and saw the resident bald eagles in and around their nests. I fished from about 2:00pm until about 5:45pm. It is pre-spawn fishing time!
No bites on a hair jig, tube, spinner jig or chatterbait.
