High muddy water everywhere but Salmo's tip about checking the tribs paid of for Tyler and me. Plus it was a beautiful day!
The strong NW winds blew most of the water out of the creek but we were still able to get up pretty far to then float our way out.
We were the only boat up the creek....
Tyler hooked up quickly but the LMB was running towards us and he got off after a jump. All is good!
I then got a nice hit from a little piggy!
All the fish we caught were very well fed! Especially this one!
I was up on Tyler and then he went to work!
We were trying to get to a shoreline but there was no water. Tyler saw some movement and made a toss. He got a hit. I then made a toss...I got slammed and the reel started screaming! When I went to get control...fish off. I suspect it was a hefty snakehead...Tyler said it was a 15 pounder. No way to know except by the violent reaction of the run. I am still thinking about it.....
Then we saw a couple of guys in a 10' jon coming over our way. I wondered if it was Dan but he moved to Pittsburgh. Then I heard, "hey, is that you Ernie?". Sure enough, it was Dan and his brother Paul. Dan knows these waters like no one...I hope they did well.
Good to see ya Dan!
We each caught a few more but Tyler was on his game!
Some observations:
- The wind pulled a lot of water out of the creek and made it hard to drift.....it was trolling speed!
- We got stuck 3-4 times but good teamwork got us off without having to get out of the boat.
- Water temps were in the mid to high 60's.
- The water was clear at the top of the creek, discolored at the bottom of the creek and dirtier elsewhere.
- When we went to hit a few docks, we say a ton of dead shad. Then we saw what appeared to be a net marked by jugs. Hint to net guy....go check you nets, you are killing Capt. Mike's bait!
- Both ramps at Pohick are now open
- We quit around noon and the park was packed. Perfect time to get off the water.
- Best lures today were soft swimbaits on a weighted hook and chatterbaits.
Did I already say it was a beautiful day?

Nice work fellas. When I went out with Odenkirk there 2 weeks ago..............there were thousands and thousands of dead shad there. Most were near the commercial catfisherman's nets . You should send Odenkirk an email about it......that the commercial guy is still killing a lot of by-catch.

I was out on a boating trip at Pohick yesterday with the missus (non-fishing trip) and saw all those dead shad. We were wondering what the cause was. Indiscriminate "by-catch" killing, eh? :-( Nets are bad!
Nice work, Ernie. I had a rod but after talking to a couple guys not having success I didn't make any effort. Plus, the boat we had would not allow me to get to the good fishy spots.

I wonder if we saw you out there. We were working the Mason Neck shoreline as we headed back in.
