Good, simple explanation of tide and current.....

Tide describes water raising up or going down.

Current is water moving.

You'll often hear guys say the tide is ripping - really it is the current.

Many confuse high / low tide with slack water.

Slack current often comes approx. 1 1/2 hours after the high / low tide. It will depend on the tide prediction site - try finding one vert close to your fishing spot.

Using the example of 8:05 (high tide) - best current will be from roughly 7 until 9. Keep in mind wind can slow the current if it is against it.
Rockfish seem to feed best when current is strongest.

Just to throw another curve at you - the current on the surface might be different than down 10 to 20 feet. I've seen slack on surface yet strong current on bottom in 30 feet of water.
