Pax River....Chesapeake Bay.....Mattawoman Creek report, 5-27-11

Jamie Gold, Andrew Do and I met up with Capt. Dennie Fleming at the Solomons ramp 0630.

We knew fishing had been slow........and we were about to find out (the dreaded May worms again?) just how slow.

In our 1st spot, I was able to take the skunk off the boat with an undersized (by a lot) striper. My crew mates were amazed.....

Andrew then hooked up....

...and landed a little one. We were marking lots of fish but the catching was tough....

....then Jamie got one.

And then Andrew got a call.....

....and I got to reel in another little one.

Capt. Dennis was none too happy so we tries a few more spots to no avail. So out to the bay we go!

Pretty pictures huh?

We fished the Power Plant and got ZERO bites.....we were dejected and the good Capt. was devastated. He said we should cut our losses and call it a 1/2 day and go in. We agreed and the wheels started turning. On the way back, I needed to stop by D & S Marine to pick up my boat which was having a few goodies installed on it. I said, "let's go to the Mattawoman and do some bass fishing before we go home". Brilliant! Then Andrew said, "we don't have any bass tackle!". Then Capt. Dennis said, "come by the house and borrow some".

Man...I love it when a plan comes together! So off to D & S we go and on to Slavins Ramp we drive.

We put in ....

....and decide to head over to the spot that was so good to me last week.

Andrew strikes gold quickly with a top water catch!

It took a while before I got one....

He was hungry....had another lure in his gut.

As Rob Allen said when I talked to him, we made a little lemonade and still had a great day. We covered a ton of water but we had a good time (sure beats being at work). This one was not to be....such is fishing!

You're fishing my home water.  We have a home about two blocks from the lighthouse.

Couldn't get out today and the next few days look nasty also.  Guess I'll fish for Croakers in the surf with the grand children.

Yep....I pointed that out to the crew....looked for you out there but only saw a mom with a kid, strolling the beach.

Last year at this time we agreed a method involving a carolina rig and a sandworm would be a good choice. And a fly rod would have been deadly with a small clouser or even a san jaun worm..

Yep....if I only had my fly rod. There were 3 on Dennis' boat so.....no fly.

lol...the call was important!

I also hooked up with a skate or ray that added some excitement to the trip. Never saw the thing before it came loose. Great time though! Thanks Ernie for putting this trip together.
