Sandy Pt Stripers 3-20-11

I got there around 6:30am and had my line in by 7 or so.  Air temp was 37 with a solid breeze out of the North...so it was slightly chilly. I snapped my spinning rod in half on the first cast, so I only fished one line for the day. My first saltwater trip of 2011 hadn't started well tongue

Around 8-830 the action picked up. A bunch of runts were caught, with a few slightly larger fish mixed in. I caught one little guy,  then this one.

Next cast I got this one. All fish released of course.

And for the rest of the day all I caught were runts. I think I ended with 10 or 12 stripers, 1 grimey fishing rod, and this white cat on my last cast. So maybe it wasn't so much of a saltwater trip as it was a brackish trip.

In any case, I had fun.  Might try to make it up to Sandy once more this Spring.

Looks like a real good day except for the broken rod. What's the preferred bait?

A bloodworm threaded onto a 5/0-7/0 circle hook is the go-to bait this time of year.

I was afraid you'd say that $$

Yeah, bloodworm prices are ridiculous. Fortunately this is the only time of year that I use them. I definitely prefer lures, they're more fun to use and they don't bite!

Why such a big hook?  Your blood worms will last much longer with a smaller hook.  Keep using a circle and the fish shouldn't swallow it although it happens still with 7/0 or #1.  Only small pieces are needed even for the larger fish.  Fresh cut herring will get the job done too.  Gizzard shad is about useless.

With the heavy gear I'm using, I feel safer going with bigger hooks. It's easy to pull out a little hook with a 10' heavy action rod, 50lb braid, and a 6oz sinker.

Nice fish! Congrats.

Anybody throwing lures around there or is this strictly a bait situation?

For shore fishing at Sandy Point, it's purely a bait thing right now. I'm sure the guys in boats are sticking some fish on lures though. The flats should be turning on soon I would think.
