Occoquan YP & Striper Trip 3-5-11

Patrick and I were fishing by 7:45.  It was slow!  Lots of boats and very few catching.  We saw very few caught but did manage about 20 or so YP and kept 6.  Patrick with the biggest YP....

Patrick also had big fish surprise of the day with this nice 20" striper on light tackle!

Re: Occoquan YP & Striper Trip 3-5-11

Let me piggy back on this thread.

After finishing work on Sunday, March 6, I went to Occoquan Regional Park in the afternoon hoping the rain would stop or pause few time.
I couldn’t fish for yellow perch in the open area. I brought an anchor on the kayak. But I forgot that I brought the anchor. I was drifting too fast.

I went to the one of the covered dock and fished for Crappie for two hours.  I lost two big crappie at 13” while preparing the camera. I caught 5 tiny LM, and 10 crappie @9-12” on a 1/16 oz jig head with a small red/white tube. I used Smelly Jelly.
My wife didn’t mention about my being smelly after fishing in the past.  But she didn’t like the smell of Smelly Jelly.  One tiny lure with Smelly Jelly rubbed, stinks up the truck and the garage.  Next time I keep the lure out side of the vehicle and garage.

It was nice to meet Thai.

I hope it doesn't rain next time.
Thanks,
Joe

Yes, I'm trying to shake this notion everyone seems to have that I don't fish anymore....

Sorry to revive an old thread, but during the spawning season, is it important to arrive around high or low tide?  I was going to use some of the limited shore access on the tidal Occoquan to dunk Fish Bites worms and see what I get.

Probably too late for the YP.  Tide should not matter at the height of the spawn.
