For years, Roland Stecker has wanted to take me fishing but circumstances have never worked out. This weekend, they did.
After driving 200+ miles, I met Roland around 11 AM at the Riverside Motel ramp and off we went.....but not too far as the wind was howling with gusts to 30mph!
Roland throws an unweighted bubble gum senko with a pistol grip baitcaster...that's it!
I took my skunk off with a nice little one pounder on a soft plastic shrimp/crawdad made by Marsh-Works. A little later, another one fell to this lure.
Roland caught a few on his so we were doing OK.
A little later, I switched to a swimbait fished on a weighted hook. Two fish fell to this lure and they were a little bigger.
Things started to slow up as we worked a bank and Roland said that we should move. I told him to wait a minute as I was fighting a nice fish on my light baitcaster (6 lb line). A net was needed to land a near 5 pounder! Nice fish for sure!
I went wacky with his used up bubblegum senkos....
After that one, things got slow and the weather turned on us as a front came through and got us wet. Interestingly, we only caught one fish in the rain.
At around 4:30, we decided to call it a day. We caught 15 bass in total and we satisfied with the outing. The area is beautiful, reminded me a little of the Chickahomony River.
It's supposed to blow even harder tomorrow so we may chase speckled trout in the sound (on the west side of Roanoke Island, away from the wind).

Blown out today....
We were going to fish for specks with Reese Stecker (Beach Bum Fishing Charters) but the NW wind is just too much.
Tomorrow, we chase bass again.

Small world Joe! I have known Roland for almost 30 years are remember Reese as a little kid. I have also fished with him down at the Outer Banks. He wanted to take us fishing for big reds down in Okrakoke on Sunday but it would not have given me time to get back....I am regretting not being able to go.

We headed out to the same area that we fished on Friday...blue bird day!
I scored 1st with this stinky pickerel!
Then Roland got on the board....
I stared to throw a hard suspending swimbait and got a decent hit....from a decent yellow perch!
This is a very fishy area.....
I scored a nice bass on the pink wacky....
And then Roland caught his 2nd and last fish for the day.....
....while he had a few bites, he was never able to land any more.
Fortunately, I caught 7 bass plus the YP and pickerel for a 9 fish day and a boat total of 11 fish....
I changed lures often to try to find the magic but they bit the offering and then shut down until I offered something else.
This was a great place to fish and I was very thankful that Roland invited me.
There was another boat in the group, they went out all three days. I do know that on day 3 they caught at least 8 bass. But....on day 1 and 2, they only caught 1 bass in total....that's slow fishing. They did not fish where Roland and I fished but were close.
