While on vacation at Cacapon State Park in WV, I took Andrew and a nephew 45 minutes west to my favorite float on the upper Potomac. We put in 10 miles above Little Orleans in Maryland and put out 7 hours later. The water was lower than normal but very clear, and where we found pools we found very aggressive smallies. This was the best float of the year thus far. Between the three fishermen we managed 55 fish . . . two were catfish, and the rest were SMB. Andrew managed the largest at 14" and just under 2 lbs. The thing about the smallies on the upper Potomac is not the size but the fight. A 8" fish can bend your rod in half. We also saw three bald eagles, including one that swooped down and caught a fish just fifty yards from our canoes - very cool.
Perhaps we can organize a float later in August. A local couple in the little Orleans area helps me with canoes ($40 ea) and can port up to eight people via truck and canoe tralier.
