7-19-10, Chesapeake Bay report

Slow day of catching but a nice time on the water.

I picked up Curly and Jeff at 4:45 Am and by 6:15 AM we were at Tri State Marine in Deale where we were to meet Bob.

The plan was to fish the bay and hopefully get in to some breaking fish.

Somehow, the weather forecast changed during the overnight and I was advised that we were to get 15-20 kt winds and some wave action on the bay. Oh well, we had the day off so on we went. It was a bumpy and wet ride across the bay but we made it and started marking some fish on the south side of Poplar Island...just where Jimmy and I got into them a couple of weeks back.

Only one problem today, they were not biting! After 10 drifts we hit a nice point that had some current on it and the skunk was off!

Shortly after, both Jeff and Bob hooked up but they were smaller fish so NO pictures.

Jeff then got a nice one....

We hit the sod banks and I hooked up with a ray. I heard Curly say, "mark it (time), this is going to be a while". I was using my Med. Moderate rod so it had a nice bend on it. Fortunately, the beast spit the hook and we continued looking for fish.

We didn't catch any more so we motored around Poplar. We just could not mark any fish....nor see any working birds.

We then hit the sod banks again and Bob got a nice keeper sized one!

For the day, we only caught 7 stripers....Jeff had 4 of them!

The way back was more comfortable but the atmosphere was starting to change so we decided to come in early and avoid any storms....glad we did that!

Getting a little wet was a treat yesterday in that heat. I would call yesterday a little damp, wet was last week at beaver dam. You VA guys really know how to treat an old fart from MD.
