Just to be clear on MD boating regs...

if I want to fish the U.P. from a 16.5' trolling motor propelled canoe I need: life vests for each passenger, a throwable, and a whistle? Anything else? I was reading on the DNR but they had some list that included a boating safety class and a fire extinguisher. Surely there is a separate list for electric only vessels?

*if it makes a difference, I will be boating the UP between MD/WV, not MD/VA

No clue om MD/WV regs but in VA, I believe you need to have the canoe registered if you have a motor on it.

Maybe others know more.....

Re: Just to be clear on MD boating regs...

I am pretty sure the canoe is registered, I'm trying to figure out if there are any other safety equipment items that I would need. I figure it's probably the same regulations in the Potomac at Algonkian as it is above Harper's Ferry; it's all MD water anyway, right? smile

I know once we put the trolling motor on our small boats we had to paint the registration numbers on the boat and then the boating registration class if for above a certain hp I am pretty sure, because I had to get one for my dads 30hp.

Re: Just to be clear on MD boating regs...

Anyone operating a motorized vessel in MD who was born after 7/1/1982 needs a safe boating certificate from somewhere.

Any motorized vessel needs to be registered somewhere. In MD you need a title to get the registration numbers and sticker. Stickers are free for under 7.5 hp, but getting a title costs money and time. You need a certificate of origin or a title from another site along with a bill of sale. MD charges sales tax on the value of the boat, so don't include the value of your motor.

Looks like you're good without the fire extinguisher since there's no gasoline

You might need some kind of lights between sunset and sunrise.
