3/9/10 Occoquan River

Carl, Thai, and I tried our luck chasing yellow perch today. I would have been happy even if we hadn't caught anything because the weather was beautiful. It was a fantastic day for fishing. We saw lots of other boats and shore-fisherman trying their luck. I don't think any of them did as well as we did. Make sure to have your license if you intend to fish down there. The game wardens were going around checking licenses and equipment on boats.

Here's the first perch that we photographed:

We had to hold most of the fish over the cooler or the water as we unhooked them to keep them from spraying milk all over the boat...Never experienced that before...

Thai set the hook on what he thought was a fish. Then he noticed he was snagged. Then I got snagged. Turns out it was the rope to the anchor. We hauled the anchor up to retrieve our lures. Low and behold, Thai's silver buddy had firmly attached a perch to the anchor rope!

Here's our cooler about 1/3 of the way through the day. Notice the nice sized pumpkinseeds

Thai and Carl managed a few largemouth between the both of them. This was the biggest:

CRUISIN'

Carl somehow managed to catch a few yellow perch that didn't seem like they should be able to fit a treble hook into their mouth. I don't think Thai or I possess the ultimate fishing wisdom and/or skill to perform such amazing feats. Here is one example:

Carl snagged a little shiner and Thai hooked it onto his dropshot rig and let it drift while he kept jigging his silver buddy. Pretty soon he noticed his rod tip twitching so he grabbed it and ended up reeling in this:

Carl was going to do the final count tonight or tomorrow. We all guessed somewhere in the 60s with at least as many released. The vast majority of the fish caught were males and on the small side.

What a great day for fishing, I thought about you guys while I was trying to hurt Ernie at the office.  just kidding ernie.  I was thinking how fishing was all day at work.  Carl looked like he was happy, but than agian I don't think I have ever seen carl being sad while fishing.  you have to love fishing.

Sorry for the hijack but I actually think Mo enjoys watching me squirm while he and Benny work on my shoulder. But I have to be honest, they know what they are doing! Well....time for ice just like the good doctor ordered!

I'm excellent at using the trolling motor to find 20-23' smile   ...as long as I have someone behind me to keep reading the depth finder to me.
