The last time I went they had many of the same vendors as the Richmond show.

NEWSFLASH!!!

I was just handed ten (10) tickets to the show. They are worth $8 each.

As well, I will be going and have room in the truck. I am leaving Ashburn at 7:15, stopping to get some grub for the road. I plan on leaving there before 4 PM.

Let me know if you need/want a ticket or two or three.

As promised:

CD Dollar- owns a kayak shop at Kent Narrows and also guides (kayak or 23' center console). he talked about gear and the essentials such as: whistle, air horn, life jacket, paddle, radio, beacon, 23-30' throw rope, sponge. these sound simple but they are necessary. Traveling with a buddy is almost a prerequisite.

He likes longer rods (7-7.5') when in a kayak so that he can move the fish around the boat.

He suggested that one carefully rig their kayak to their own needs and specs. Drilling holes requires lots of "marine goop".

Richie Gaines- He is a guide that I have fished with a few times and am fishing with on May 7....Eastern Bay. This was his subject matter so it was appropriate. He mentioned that the bay, much like many fishing areas, is changing so one must adapt. To him, a fishing plan is a must. Going to the same spot every time you fish can get monotonous.

The key to catching stripers in the bay is to have at least two of the following present (in this order):

structure
water quality
food

He spends 20% of his time fishing shallow (less than 10' of water) and 80% fishing offshore (10-50' of water).

For shallow, he likes:

cooler water (<70)
tide
current
points, rip rap, jetties, poles
clear water if possible

For off shore (study charts) he likes:

bridges
lighthouses
channel markers and edges
humps
rock piles
hard bottoms
current

Slack tide is break time, go get lunch or do something else he says.

Don't motor over where you are fishing.

The tide difference is 6 minutes per mile so there is a chance you can always find moving water in Eastern Bay.

Ken Penrod- he spent most of his time talking about his book, the equipment he is sponsored by, his conservation efforts, his company and he did say that he likes to put in at Lander and fish upriver (he gets better results than downriver).


Colder water= bigger fish

<45 degree water= fish calm water
>45 degree water= fish eddies
>70+ fish current...need oxygen.

Dave Kerrigan- he talked about fishing DC water for all species.

Jan-Feb= walleyes...use white curly tail and/or rattle trap between Little Falls and Key Bridge. Walleye can be found all the way to the WW Bridge. As well, you can catch LMB and SMB.

March- the beginning of the run for many species, very weather dependent

April- the stripers come in

May-Jun= all species are active

July-Sep= tough time to fish

Oct-Dec= everything is on again

"cal" would be an abbreviation for "calm". I was typing way too fast....thanks for the catch.

He said that in cold water, the big smallies will be the most aggressive since they are staring to build up energy for the spawn. They will sit in the calm water since there is no issue of lack of oxygen when the water is cold. Slow fishing but possibilities of bigger fish.
