Suggestions?
And if we have any other rule changes, I can amend them.

If Charlie Taylor gets in on this..................it's over for the rest of us
I have the NHBA Tourney schedule and it does not call for Charlie to be fishing DC waters. He fishes most of their tourneys (20+) so we may have a chance!

2010 goes until December 31......why July as cutoff?
No one will get on the water until March......

Lets start this after MLK day and have it run till Christmas. Then we can do a little get together and I'll attempt to make cookies in the shape of your favorite fish.
July cutoff is kinda soon....

I bet they all look like flounders

Bonus points for kayaks?
Artificial vs live/cut bait?
So many questions.....once we all weigh in I will revise the rules and we can get started.

lets not make it too complicated and just get out there and fish. I say, as long as you aren't electrofishing, cast netting, using dynamite you're good to go.
Osprey, are you saying your favorite fish ISN'T a flounder?!?!!?! best fish ever!

where the heck can you fish in DC?
VA has so many spots that I've never even looked for spots in DC.

Let's see:
Chain Bridge
Fletchers
C & O canals
Rock Creek
Roosevelt Island
Columbia Island Marina
Gravelly Point
Roaches Run
Tidal Basin
Haines Point
Anacostia River
Alexandria Power Plant discharge
I know guys who fly fish the pond off Constitution Av just west of the Viet Nam Memorial...and catch fish!
I am sure I missed 72 or 73 other spots you can fish without a boat. If you have a boat or canoe.......another 100+ places!
Later this spring, some guys on a fly board are thinking of doing a Fletcher's to Gravelly yak float.....very cool and with endless possibilities!

Andrew, for the record, stuffed flounder is delicious, but you can get way more crab imperial in a 10# striper. Plus the striper is more fun to catch.
I don't know if it's the food or the tourney idea that's getting me excited, but either way I'm in.

What about tributaries/feeder creeks? ie: 4 Mile Run?
Thai might have had a good chance at the crappie title with one that he caught today. Too bad we didn't measure/photo it.

Ok. Just wanted to make sure how we were defining "DC waters." If we are using the DC border, it appears the DC line goes up to the last bridge at 4 Mile Run so part of it is "DC waters". hmmmm.

I'll just have to catch him in the hotspot and fight him while walking to the last bridge then Dan!

As long as it is between these two, you are fine regardless if it's not DC proper.

so all of four mile run is eligible?

Perhaps the easiest way to handle this is by saying that the contest waters are those whereby a DC fishing license is required.

I really don't want to get into tracking points etc. I will update the 1st post later and that is what we will go by. As people catch fish, they need to report it using this thread. I will have the running totals going and update accordingly.
Whose idea was this anyway? I am fishing more out of Pohick this spring which means that I just took me and whoever is with me out of the running for some of the species. Oh well....such is life!

"where a DC license is required"-- do you need a DC license if you are standing on Virginia land fishing in DC water? My assumption would be no, so is that scenario not allowed for the tournament?
why have you decided to fish from Pohick this spring Ernie?

DC owns the Potomac in the city and they do not have reciprocity like MD and VA do in the upper and lower Potomac. So....a license would be required to fish it from either bank.

I have always fished Fletcher's in the spring because it produces but it is a PIA to get there since it's "no wake" from Memorial Bridge up and there are lots of rowers out there. As well, it can get ugly after a rain...less so in Pohick (unless we get lots of rain in a short period). No question that I will fish DC but it will be different (less) than in years past.
Last year, I went out of Pohick a few times and had mild success, not really knowing what I was doing.
1. There is a great white perch fishery (jigging)
2. There is a great bass fishery
3. There is a great blue cat fishery
4. There is a great striper fishery (for slobs and schoolies).
The best part is that I am on the fishing grounds within 5-7 minutes of launching and I can roam around to several spots that I have learned about from experienced anglers.

Dominion Dan:
Anytime a line is in DC waters, you need a DC license, regardless of where you are standing or where the boat is sitting. I was on the wrong end of this while guiding and fishing Fox Ferry. My boat was sitting in Maryland waters, but my line was in DC waters, 10 feet away. Oops! DC Harbor Police were sitting in the Spoils, just waiting for me to hook a fish. (By the time they got to me, the fish was landed in Maryland waters so they were unable to give me a ticket for taking stripers out of season, but if I had not had a DC license, I would have had a ticket for no license.
Thai:
The DC line goes from point to point across the mouth of Four Mile Run. This means that NONE of Four Mile Run would be eligible as it is all Virginia Waters.
Curly:
I doubt that any of you would have any problem with me winning this contest. There is no category for Gizzard Shad!

Google has the DC line running up to the GW Parkway bridge. I can't find any other maps to show that part of the border up close.

This is one time when I would not follow what Google says.....

Check out the Tidal Potomac River map put out by GMCO. It uses the GPS coordinates to draw the line and it is very distinct throughout the city.
