What about arranging an invite tourney with a BBQ potluck after? I'd gladly shell out the $10 for the tourney in that case since I am not a resident.

Great Idea Michael! I'm also not a resident so I don't have regular access... I do go to Ashburn lakes from time to time, but that's only when I'm going to fish with someone who lives there... I like to respect the posted signs smile

Re: Proposed AV Fishing tournament (s) for 2013!

with all due deference, and in the spirit of capt. Full Disclosure (aka curly)

LONG FISH- oops caps- long fish dont impress me. heavy ones do. visually the ruler levels the field, as scales can vary, but so what?? i mean really???

competing is good fun, but in the end what difference does it make.?? does the potential for a divisive issue not outweigh the benefits??

a guy like ernie can wear it like a loose jacket. some of us are a little more, shall we say, intrepid.

i am not a "document" kind of guy. i like to admire and release quickly. sometimes required surgery delays release long enough. then hold fish on trough or hang on hook and weigh?

typically these measures are not harmful. there are times tho, that i feel the documentation process could jeopardize the health of some of our apex specimens.

finally, in the spirit of sportsmanship, how appropriate is tournament participation??

in the finest sense, it is entirely.

in a practical sense, does the thirst for recognition not occasionally outweigh the influence from the better angels of our nature?

Re: Proposed AV Fishing tournament (s) for 2013!

Good post Jeff....I did buy a foldaway ruler but I still don't bring it to the water (nor do I bring a scale usually). Maybe I am lazy or maybe I don't expect much since I really don't spend time fishing the lakes.

Whether weight or length, my proposal is to perhaps we can have some "events" like what Michael suggested (invite tourney). I would be glad to host a Cook Out at the end so we can swap stories and compare what was caught (and how). It does not have to be a long period and it could be a day event.

I sometimes participate in the NHBA tourneys (spring only as the water is still cool) and I like what happens after weigh in. Everyone tells how they caught the fish and on what. Most guys tell the truth, a couple want to keep it their secret. Bah to that....

The one contest that I enjoy is the 2 month long Severn River Rod & Keg Club White Perch tourney. Longest perch is 1st prize and aggregate of top 3 fish is 2ns prize. Each guy ponied up $10 so money is not the issue. What I love is competing against perch masters where 3/4" will make a difference between 1st and 4th. I was 4th this year with 36.5" (had 36"last year) and the 1st Place guy had 37.25", followed by 37" and 36.75". I keep a Hawg Trough on the boat as it is easy to use. I have a scale as well but rarely use it. As well, I only fish it in the shallows using small spinner baits. Others can use live bait or jig 'em from deep where the big guys hold out. I stay with my style but this is me and may not be what others like.

So....we all have different thoughts and ideas.

As I mentioned before, most likely I will hold a couple of "events" from my house next year.

Re: Proposed AV Fishing tournament (s) for 2013!

Count me in Ernie! I fish kayak "tournaments" a lot and it is not for the competition. In fact I would have won one this year but I was having such a good time shooting the breeze with some of the guys in the parking lot that I missed the weigh in, no big deal!

Maybe keep the season long tourneys for the hardcore bass guys and do a few friendly's to get some board m&g's going? We could do a lure entry fee, everyone brings a new lure, winner takes the pot. That was fun because you got to get some tackle you might not normally use and then the guy that gave it would explain how to use it. Cash could go to BBQ expenses or prize as well?

Either way, I'm not a AV resident, so I don't really have a say at all!

Re: Proposed AV Fishing tournament (s) for 2013!

I've participated in a few lure tourney fees and they are really nice. A few guys at another local club (northern virginia anglers club) put them on from time to time... one may be as early as next week.

Most times the entry fee is 2 fishing items, where 1st place takes 3 items, 2nd takes 2 and everyone else takes 1. So everyone walks out with something. The rest of the stuff are saved and used for the next tourney. When winner takes all is done, the entry fee is one bag of plastics.

I'm down and I volunteer to also roast a leg of lamb for the cookout! LOL that way I can eat something too (I follow a religious diet) and share the deliciousness of lamb! smile
