Info for the fishing notebook. This applies in a tidal river's freshwater zone where salinity is less than 0.5 ppt. The mixing is more complicated along the boundary layer of the salt wedge which shifts upriver and downriver with tidal action.

In the Potomac, for example, the river is freshwater until approximately the lower end of Occoquan Bay. Below there the river is brackish. The transition zone between fresh and saltwater salinity is between there and the 301 Bridge, more or less. Freshwater species extend approximately down to Potomac Creek depending on their salinity tolerances and prevailing conditions.
