Occoquan River 4/8/26

Got out with Jimmy for his first time shad fishing.  He will be out of commission for a while, so I was hoping for a good day.  It was cold in the morning, but the water was 58 degrees.  We started a little after 8am and ran to the top.  We were the only boat up there and had high hopes.

After over an hour without a bite and a couple of break offs on snags we just had the amazing view of so many birds and Eagles taking advantage of the shad.

Finally, Jimmy got the skunk out with a small herring.

We moved down a little bit and then tried below the bridge.  I had left my extra tied up rigs in the car, so we made a quick trip back for those.  Then we went back up top.

A little while later, I caught a herring.

I caught one more herring and then a smaller shad.  Then I finally hooked a nice shad that was almost 17 inches.

We were optimistic for a better bite window, but it was not to be.  We tried a couple spots and never saw anyone catch any all day.  We finally called it at 12:30pm and went to lunch at Brickmakers.  Jimmy had their burger and I had the Rachel sandwich.

Then we got stuck in traffic due to construction and hardly moved for over 30 minutes.  All in a day of fishing.  At least we caught something and the sun was shining.

Great day to be out and although the lack of fish and traffic are tough.....I bet lunch was pretty awesome along with the views!

Nice to see some herring. They've apparently been in decline for a while.
