Occoquan River 11/24/25

I decided to hit the river for bass or whatever would bite.  I got there a little after 7:00am and took my time getting on the water.  The water was pretty clear and 49 degrees starting out.  High tide was forecasted around 9:30am.

I started way at the top throwing a Keitech swimbait, then 78 size jerkbait.  There were two guys in another boat working behind me.  Not a whiff.  They said they caught 1 bass.  I worked my way out and threw a tube and smaller swimbait as well.  It looked great, but I could not buy a bite.

After eating my 10:30am lunch, I moved back below the ramp area and was just casting at targets.  The wind started to pick up.  A guy in a kayak was coming back upriver and I asked if he caught anything and he said a couple.  I asked bass or crappie.  He said crappie.

I moved downriver making casts with different lures and made it to the 95 bridge.  There was a large metal boat tied to one of the pillars and I noticed a hose floating behind them.  I saw a bunch of bubbles and a diver surfaced with one of those big round helmets with the glass window on the front.  Not sure what he was doing, but he moved around to cover all the pillars.

I decided to look for crappie.  I found huge schools of fish in different areas in 20 feet of water.  Some were suspended and others were from 10 feet all the way to the bottom.  I was throwing a 1/8 ounce chartreuse jig jead with a white 2.8 Keitech swimbait.  Because I was not anchored, I moved around and tried working the lure through schools.  It took a little while, but I got a bite and was hooked up.

I kept moving around and casting to work through the schools and ended up getting two more.

The next one was a chunky one.

It was after 1:30pm, so I called it and headed back to the ramp.  I took my time loading and the traffic was a little heavy with construction on The Fairfax County Parkway.

I got home and unhooked the trailer.  I have to jack it up to take it off and I lower the jack to allow me to control it when I push it into the garage.  The jack must not have locked and the trailer started to drop.  I caught it and tried to get the jack to catch.  I thought it did and the jack slipped backward and the tongue fell on my right foot.  The cross-bar for the jack hit right in the middle of my foot over the bone for the big toe.  I felt like it was not broken, but it was swelling fast.

I called my daughter, who was home, to help me get the trailer jack up and move the boat to the garage.  I then had to park my vehicle.

I got inside and took a picture before going to Urgent care.  My foot is not that chubby usually.  I was lucky because I had thick socks and crocks on that cushioned the blow.

The good news is that it is not broken.  It will take a week or so to heal.  I will go next week to my Orthopedic doctor for follow up.  I was supposed to help my wife with the Christmas decorating and put up lights this week....

Re: Occoquan River 11/24/25

Lots of action for the day but something was missing.

- seeing that diver must have been cool

- good jog locating and catching some crappie

- glad the foot incident didn't turn out to be worse. BTW, one of the reasons that I don't own a boat any more.

- your wife will not have any sympathy, you will help!

- finally, no Brickmaker's???

Time to go fishin' again!

Christian said "that is why Ernie sold his boat".  She gave me hell as she is always telling me to be careful.  Foot is already feeling a little better after keeping it up and iced.  I will do what I can to help because Christian took the next 3 days off to do the house.  Happy wife...

I was solo, so no Brickmaker's.

Re: Occoquan River 11/24/25

Thanks for the report.  Those were some really good looking crappie and honestly...I'd be thrilled to catch anything.  Really cool that you kept at it and adjusted to the day.  I'm guessing the diver was doing an inspection being a hardhat.  Periodic inspections are conducted throughout due to the poor conditions of bridges, but just like most things....no one pays attention until lives are lost.
As far as your foot goes....you are very fortunate to not have broken it and I'm happy for you that you didn't...but dang...that's just as bad!  Did you really not want to put up the x-mas decorations? hahaha lol

Foot pics should have been on the hg trough for comparison. I'm betting the crappie would have looked better.  :-)

Yep, that just looks like it hurts. Glad it wasn't serious and you managed to catch some nice crappie
