I'm taking off every other Monday at work so I can burn some time and not have it convert to sick leave in December, which means it's a good time for fishing. Decided to go to an area that over the last years is normally hardly fished as it's at the end of a float and usually just paddling through it. It's a longer pool with some horizontal ledge Rock along the bottom with one area having three rocks above water giving some eddies and a little bit of push water. So I decided to go there and actually take my time because it has held big fish in the past.

Started off. Throwing the Whopper plopper type lure, sunfish colored swimbait, and the same darker brown crankbait that got me my 20 on the last load. And of course the fluke. Got some small hits on the fluke working the bank and some shade. When I got to one Eddie area behind a little points I did have a bigger fish pull of a little bit of water on it and then come back for a second hit but I missed it both times. Right front of that point is a big Rocky flat so I worked that over her for a while with the crank bait at swim bait and got nothing.

When started to pick up a little bit and there was just an absolute ton of minnows in this area. So I switched over to a war eagle nest finesse spinnerbait and switched the crankbait to the usual Brown and brighter orange color. I throw in the summer. Had about a 13-in with a boatside release on the crankbait after that and then my first cast with a spinner bait. I had a 15 nail it.

Best fish of the day came. When I got to those three ledge rocks. I threw the fluke behind one of them in an Eddie area and started working it back. I saw a fish following it, so I killed it and let it fall. Saw the swipe. Felt the weight and set the hook and realized how big he was. After a few minutes. This solid 17-in fish was in the kayak

After that I managed to find another 15 on the spinner baits as I was talking to a homeowner along the river. Caught it right next to his Little boat dock.

Not a bad afternoon on the river at all

Go man, go! It is great to get out when there is less pressure. Nice fish.

Excellent report!

I always say I am going to throw a crank and a spinner bait. Then I do...for a few casts and go back to what I trust.

That's usually what I do. A few years ago spinnerbaits were a good producer and then they stopped working so I rarely use them now. And when I do this for about 15 minutes. But seeing all the minnows there and the fact that it was windy and a little chop in the water something told me to do it again

Two summers ago I made it a point to throw a crankbait consistently. I have one rod that's really great for crankbait so it's the only thing I throw on it. I just told myself to throw it. And that summer through fall had a stretch of six smallmouth between 18 and 19 and 1/2 in. So I've definitely learned that you're not going to get the confidence on it unless you throw it
