Crows Nest Aug 12 2024

Decided to take a nice evening trip in the backyard at crows nest.  It didn't take me long to load up the yak and drive the 1.5 miles or so there.  It took me longer to launch the yak since there is a 100+ yard dock you have to go down and a floating yak launch (I actually prefer a simple boat ramp).  The yak launch isn't the greatest for anyone with a heavy yak, but it gets the job done.

I launch and head out into the pads and I get zero hits on the way out.  It's 4 pm and I don't get my first hit until 6.  I ran into a couple guys heading back in and they didn't get a single bite during their time.  I wonder if it has anything to do with the heavy pressure of night bow fishing and such.  Mattawoman seemed to be the same way to be honest.  I have a few hits and misses and then finally hooked up with something nice size.  I gave it time and set the hook hard, but it still came undone.

Time to change my technique.  Going with Capt Mikes single hook soft top water frog.  Maybe even something smaller!  Called it around 730.-  Got back to the parking lot and I see someone tying up a yak to a tree (looks to be for night fishing) based on timing and setup.

I did get to spend a nice evening with great weather on the water!  I think I'll take my boat out later today and just cruise the potomac with these nice weather days!

Always good to get out.  I took my boat out on the river for the first time since June yesterday.  Water was pretty muddy and I got skunked, but it was a nice day and no issues with the boat.  Saw lots of birds and about 6 Bald Eagles.  More Mergansers have made our area home.

Where did you fish most, middle or shoreline?

All over.  Creek was stained, but not as bad.  One nip on a gold Johnson spoon.

Yes!  Very true.  As I lowered the spike down along the edges to stay in the strike zone I noted there were a lot of smaller fish hiding among the pads.  I just cleaned up my fly rod so I may take it out with me next time (along with my tenkara) just for ultra light action.  Thanks for the idea!
