9-23-07, "Man...they are hurting me" Potomac River report

It had been a while since I had made the 90 mile trip down to the Cobb Island area.

Today, Jim Rekas and I headed down there with the specific interest in finding breaking fish and birds. Of course, the day started with the customary stop at the Chaptico Deli for a sausage/egg/cheese sandwich.  We also loaded up on bread pudding and a couple of sandwiches.

We finally launched at Chaptico Wharf a little after eight. The first stop was St. Margaret's Island where Curly and I had caught some nice keeper stripers at this same time last year. We worked the area (throwing and trolling) for 40 minutes and came up empty handed. We then went out to the Wicomico Light and did the same around the rocks and the structure....NADA!

While I had my Ace in the back pocket (I had received a call from Capt. Jeff Hammett the night before) we decided to try Swan Point where we have had much success in the past. But not today!! After an hour of not even a hit, we went up to Cedar Point which was a new area for me to fish. The plan was to find breaking fish and cast to them. Well.....we looked and looked and looked for several hours and we had a big SKUNK going!!  I talked to Dave on the Emma Lynn and he had been catching a few nice blues trolling but he said that they just might turn on after the tide turned. At that time, we were at flat tide so Jimmy and I decided to eat lunch before leaving the area to look for fish. Halfway through our sandwiches, the river erupted and the blues were breaking. It was a mad scramble on the boat and our 1st 2-3 casts produced nothing! I decided to really rip the retrieve and a blue took the offering (medium diving minnow)! Now we’re talkin’!

I told Jimmy to speed up (and make erratic) his retrieve and he started to land some nice blues.

For about 2 1/2 hours, all we did was chase the breaking fish. They would only stay up for 3-4 minutes which meant we could only catch a few each time we saw them. Here's Jim looking for breakers!

But then we got smart and started to pay attention to the fish finder. So we started to vertical jig and proceeded to catch stripers (no keepers) and blues (keeper size). Jim also managed to catch a teeny white perch.

We caught fish using several different lures.

The final tally for the day:

2 white perch
1 dozen undersized stripers
30+ blues with at least a dozen in the 2+ lb range!

We did manage to get a little wet when a rain shower got us but we quickly dried up after the sun came out. At around 4:30 PM, we headed back and made another customary stop....QUADES! We had a great bean soup to accompany the best crab cake in the area!

On the way back to the ramp, we stopped a few times to see if there were ant rock or perch hanging around and we managed one little perch so we called it a day....dead tired from catching the blues!

Oh yeah......I almost died laughing when Jimmy hooked into one of the bigger blues that gave him a run for his money. This blue kicked his behind and Jimmy says "man...they are hurting me". They are a mean looking fish!!

We used very light tackle which made catching these fighters a blast!!

We thought it was a couple of young chicks trying to get our attention!!big_smile  big_smile I didn't recognize the car but I did notice the BRHS on the back!

This was a fun trip...very exiting when the blues would come up.

i tell ya, with the summer we've had weather-wise, I almost wish I still lived on the river.  I'd be sitting out there now live lining for lines sides.

if you get a hard spot again Ernie, and they are upriver near the bridge, go up to persimmon pt and work the channel side of the sandbar

now it's yesterday! roll
