3-27-09, Potomac River report

Today's trip was all about exploring and working the kinks out of the new electronics. All I can say is that I am really glad I have the new chart plotter because when we launched at Gunston Cove, all we had was 50-60 feet of visibility....

....but that did not deter Patrick who immediately started to look for fish while I motored at 1 kt!

Once the fog broke a bit (2 hours into the trip) we were able to run a bit and we went over to the red buoy #66 where the big white perch (WP) were hanging out last week. We set out 4-5 rods with cut mullett to try to attract a whiskered or striped fish and we also did the bottom bouncing game to try to entice the WP. Doug got a hit and brought up the 1st WP but he never made it out of the water. Good sign but that was the last we would see of the WP!!

It stayed partly foggy through the morning....here is a shot of Mt. Vernon!

We were looking for a particular wreck that usually holds fish but after several attempts we gave up and moved up river to a known catfish spot....one that I remembered from fishing with Capt. Mike Starrett. There was another boat anchored when we got there but there was plenty of room so we set our lines out. We got a few bites and then Doug's rod bent over and he had a nice 2+ pound blue cat on very light tackle!

OK....we may be in the meat after all.....NOT! Nothing happened and we moved back to the "66'. There were a lot of boats when we got back and it was getting near quitting time so we were going to call it a day until I remembered that Doug brought the 3 rebels that I had given him previously. Doug is learning the Potomac River system so I showed him how we troll these lures. The best place to see all the rods is the front of the boat....Curly's favorite spot. So Patrick took over for Curly and had the prime seat....

A few minutes later one of the rods goes down and Patrick brings in the 1st striper of the year on my boat!

Nice!

As we headed back in, we all looked over the shoreline and didn't recognize anything since there was no shoreline in the AM.

We had a great time and learned a lot despite the low numbers of fish. I am definitely going to do it again once the bigger stripers start moving in to the flats (right across from the mouth of the Cove).

I wonder if Doug had PB&J sandwiches for dinner?

Patrick goes all the time but down lower. I have fished out of Leesylvania once but my boat really is ill suited for bass fishing.

There were quite a few bass boat out there today.

Nice report and pix. I appreciate them as I am eager to learn as much as I can about fishing the stretch from Chain Bridge to Mt Vernon. What size sabiki is that in the fourth picture? (Is that size 4?) Looks bigger than what I fooled with last year with some success.

Yep!

I usually have sandwich duty for these trips and my wife is a great sport.  I was a little late with the request this time so the best I could do was PB&J so I had sandwiches and a cooler on the kitchen counter Thursday evening.

At 5:30 the next morning I was a little fuzzy and left them sitting there.  Boy are 24 hour old PB&J's great for dinner after a day on the water.  Yummmmm.

Thanks for the trip. It was great to get out on the water as opposed to being in the office.

Let it be known that nobody can take Curly's spot...but it did feel broken in! haha

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

By the way, according to Ernie's Boca Grip the Striper in the picture is 4 pounds.  I think we need to scrub some of his old postings to check on reported weights.
