I am not sure but it makes sense....you have to put in quite a bit...do you have that much in a continuos roll?

I will ask around!

Re: make shift fly backing?

the biggest issue that i see right off is its small diameter - its gonna take a boatload of the stuff to fill up the spool.

if you're looking at getting a fly outfit squared away for this weekend, lemme check my stuff when I get home tonight and see what I have.  I used to have a large spool of it, but I can't remember how much I've used or even where it might be, but If I have some, we can get you squared away on saturday.

If I don't have any, you can pick up some just about anywhere for less than 10 bucks

Re: make shift fly backing?

After checking on two different forums, they said Dacron is better than braid unless you really don't care or fly fish much. They said you could certainly do braid but advised against it.

Re: make shift fly backing?

Mr. Rojas taught me how to make them out of line....I just got to figure this knot out to connect them.  I am trying to remember how he did it.  Matt-  stop being cheap and get real backing....

Re: make shift fly backing?

i match my leaders/tippet to the fly I'm throwing.  when chasing bigger fish with bigger flies, this becomes less criticial

with trout, the rule of thumb is the size of the fly divided by three.

I size 18 fly would need 6X tippet
size 12 would need 4X

if its an in between size , either will usually work

a size 10 could go with either 3X or 4X
