6-22-22, UP

John and I splashed the boat a little before 7a and it was gonna be an all fly day.

The river at POR was @1.5'. It will rise a foot after today's storms (more on that later).

We started out with top water and just like Wednesday with Greg, it was slow at 1st. We would give it a go for a bit before running up.

But, that did not last long!

Obligatory 1st fish!

John caught a couple of more on top but I was not having any luck so I went to a clouser and scored!

Yep...some orange in that fly!

John kept scoring..

Finally, at 8:35a, we ran up river.

While on the run, a white egret was easily flying next to us at 22+mph.

The 1st fish was a cool surprise.

Notice John's fly. Home made paddle tail!

We caught fish almost every place we went...it was so nice!

The areas I've been fishing up there are really skinny so we had to make some minor moves. Most of those moves caught fish.

Some thoughts:

- A lot of the fish we caught up river were by sight fishing. We would spot the fish, they would follow and sometimes, they would take the fly. Sometimes they would just peel away. That was a blast!

- We had several fish jump and spit the hook. That was a blast!

- Again, current was king...and wood.

- On the top water part, John caught at least 10. I caught 4-5.

- On the upper part, we caught over a dozen fish. Maybe more.

- We mainly stayed with streamers. Although we thought about going deep, we were having too much fun slinging streamer flies.

John was ecstatic! It had been a while since we fly fished the UP on my boat...for obvious reasons. Today gave us confidence that we can get some nice fish on the fly.. No monsters but a ton of fun.

My plan was to be back at the ramp by 1p. John said he was ready but I wanted a couple more casts. Sure enough, I get hit and the smallie bites me off!

Kinda glad that happened because I looked up and there was a boat coming towards us. At the same time, I looked at the radar and saw the storms. Yikes! We gotta go! We talked to the fella and he was coming over to warn us. Top notch dude. Fishes out of a Sea Ark out of Edwards ferry.

So we high tail it home (9+ miles) and I thought we were outrunning the storm. John says, "lightning". Pucker factor!!

Anyway, we got soaking wet, beached the boat at the ramp and put our wet bodies in the car to wait it out. BTW, the forecasters said, "storms at 4p". They were off by 3 hours!

The storm left and we retrieved the boat. But I could not put the cover on it so I drove around a bit and made a stop at Greek Unique. I had a Lamb Gyro. Man...that place is GOOD!!

I came home and left the boat uncovered until I heard thunder so I covered it and put it back in the barn.

The was a most satisfying day of fly fishing. I hope it keeps up.

Time to go fishin' again!

Fishing before a storm front moves through has always been money for me.

Hope to see more of those panfish - sign of a recovered river
