Tidal Occoquan 5/17

Got out in the kayak just after low tide this past Friday.  While casting out from the launch area to see if my spin set up was ok, I caught a good enough 12" largemouth on my purple square bill Rapala Shad Rap.  Due to user-camera issues (I should get a waterproof camera that is dumb enough for me to use easily) no picture.

Heartened, I paddled upstream, pitching the crankbait.  No hits, but there were some sporadic fish jumps, some sunfish, some I don't know but probably in a small school.  After reaching the footbridge and finding some current, I rigged up the fly rod in hopes there were still some shad.  The answer is no, but I threw bugs for about 40 minutes, found this white perch and got the camera to work:

That was it for the fly rod.  Needing a break, I went back to the spinning rod and tied on a 1oz. black and red spinnerbait.  Paddled up and cast to a great slow swirl next to the rapids and landed a good 17-18" striper.  Due to user-camera issues, no picture.  Didn't find any more of those, but picked up an ambitious 8" largemouth in the slack water under the site of the water plant.  Due to user-camera issues, no picture.

Paddling back to Occoquan Park, switched to a LMB pattern Rat-L-Trap.  Upstream of the footbridge got this fun surprise and miraculously figured out the camera:

That was it.  A good day, it's the multispecies day on a tidal river that I've always hoped for.
